ATM: Some take-aways on unions in the United States, particularly in the South, from the AFL-CIO MLK Civil and Human Rights Conference: 1) Celebrate wins, even the small ones. Talk about them. Advertise them on your social media. 2) It is better to have union organizers who look like the workers in the community. This also works well for accountability and will combat the workers' perception and bad reputation of unions that their organizers are a "bunch of out-of-towners."

I recently read "My Life and Work" by Henry Ford. Probably the best book I've read this year, aside from my beloved repeat Atlas, though Francisco's money speech could easily have been based on it. IYKYK, so I digress... Along with some of my favorite shareable quotes, there is also an interesting glimpse into his evaluation of the potential for electric vehicles, which considering the time, is altogether quite insightful. Hopefully these inspire you as you celebrate Labor Day today: ·The moment one gets into the "expert" state of mind a great number of things become impossible. I refuse to recognize that there are impossibilities. I cannot discover that anyone knows enough about anything on this earth definitely to say what is and what is not possible. ·The natural thing to do is to work—to recognize that prosperity and happiness can be obtained only through honest effort. ·Now a business, in my way of thinking, is not a machine. It is a collection of people who are brought together to do work and not to write letters to one another.  ·Be not bound by the present, but leave nothing to luck. ·A man ought to be able to live on a scale commensurate with the service that he renders. ·Put brains into the method, and more brains, and still more brains—do things better than ever before; and by this means all parties to business are served and benefited. ·There is no disgrace in honest failure; there is disgrace in fearing to fail.

Everyone deserves to feel safe and comfortable at work. Politics and religion are intrinsic to people's sense of identity and belonging. Beliefs held that strongly tend to be polarizing if two individuals don't agree. In the workplace, it's vital that everyone can coexist peacefully. Forcing everyone to align with one belief on either topic is bound to cause friction, and the ability to coexist diminishes. There's always space for learning, growth, and acceptance. A little bit of interesting history for you today June 19th, 1865, when Union soldiers landed at Galveston, Texas, confirming the war's end and ensuring the freedom of all enslaved individuals. Though the Emancipation Proclamation was a beacon of hope in 1863, it took over two years for its promises to be realised in Texas, the last state of the Confederacy with institutional slavery. As we commemorate this pivotal moment in history, let's reflect on the journey towards equality and justice. The resilience and courage of those freed on Juneteenth continue to inspire. Let's honour their legacy by fostering inclusivity and championing diversity in our workplaces and communities. Yet, as we celebrate progress, let us also acknowledge the road ahead. The pursuit of justice is ongoing, and we must commit ourselves to creating a future where opportunity and freedom are not just ideals but realities for all. This Juneteenth, take time to educate, to celebrate, and to act.
