"Ask us and collaborate with us (children and young people) to make a change! Policy makers must involve children and young people meaningfully in every decision-making process at every level," says Adi Soumena, a 20 year old youth from Indonesia.   Adi Soumena had the opportunity to speak directly to the policymakers at the UN General Assembly in New York. Adi participated in a panel discussion on Youth for Education in Emergencies at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, United States of America. The youth participants raised the importance of inclusive quality education for children and young people, especially during times of emergency.   "I am very proud to represent Indonesia. I also was a speaker at Joining Forces Call to Action: Children as an Agent of Change, talking about the importance of involving children and young people in every decision-making process that impacts children and young people at all levels,” says Adi.   "To achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), collaboration and continuous support from all parties are needed from the government, young people, society, academics, activists, NGOs, philanthropists, and community leaders. Collaborating inclusively and equally is the key to achieving the SDGs. Therefore, providing access, support, and opportunities for the younger generation to get involved is crucial!" #odddayswithjon It takes a village to raise a child In traditional Asian culture, the community plays a huge part in supporting each other. Back in the 60s in Singapore, staying in a village (kampung) meant that we could roam about safely and popped into any neighbour's house, as all doors were kept opened during the day time. And I witnessed the community spirit, or the village spirit, at work in Viet Nam where I was invited to share in a youth summit by VietHope - a charity organisation who provides scholarships for needy students. In its 14th year, the summit was held in Can Tho, in a resort that is owned by one of VietHope's beneficiaries. What a success story! To arm these youths with lifeskills, the summit had sessions on softskills, project management, critical thinking and communications. These were immediately practiced with 2 field sessions in an orphanage and a home for people with needs. I also delivered a short sharing on self motivation and self mastery. And to add on to the learning journey of the youths, past alumni members also joined in. Students from the last summit came back as volunteers and the summit was also organised and run by more senior students. What did I learn from them: 1. It takes a village to raise a child. VietHope had their management team, representative from the US charter, trainers, facilitators, alumni members, volunteers, corporate sponsors, students all giving their support to make it a success. 2. Determination Language was a difficulty for me as my tieng viet was limited. But with a capable translator, it allowed the students to understand about positive framing, to bring them success. And they were very eager to learn, by constantly asking questions to clear any doubts. They respected the opportunity to learn from the facilitators. 3. Framing Their motto was skills, knowledge and persistence. With these new learnings, they showed they could re-frame themselves positively to impact those around them. 4. Pay it forward Each of them after the summit has this burning desire to do good for their own community too, and especially for Viet Nam. I am proud to be on this journey with them. "The vision of Singapore as a City of Good entails building a more caring society where people take action to make life better for all. While many individuals had indicated that they were likely to volunteer in the future, factors such as lack of time may pose barriers. How can we encourage people in Singapore to volunteer more actively?" This is the real-world problem statement that the National Volunteer and Philanthropy Centre is contributing to the Ministry of Education, Singapore (MOE)'s new A-level Project Work H1 subject in schools this year through the PW Marketplace Of Ideas. Students who chose to tackle it gathered for a chat with our director of Strategy & Policy, Soek Mun Ng. In her session on Encouraging More Volunteerism, she held a Q&A and shared takeaways from our recently released National Giving Study 2023. Childhood exposure to giving, it found, makes people more likely to continue giving as adults. #100ACts –Uganda-Fostering a culture of Bulungi Bwansi 🌍Embracing Bulungi Bwansi for a Better Tomorrow 🌱 In December 2022, I witnessed the power of Global Citizenship in Katwe, Uganda. 💪✨ I embarked on a journey to empower my community with the principles of global citizenship. 🌏📚This resulted in the creation of the Katwe 1 Bulungi Bwansi Group! 🌟 This incredible team has been promoting cleanliness and raising awareness about sanitation, one neighbourhood at a time. 🗑️🏘️ We organize monthly community cleanups that have not only reduced diseases but also created a safer environment for all. 🧼🌿 Our biggest beneficiaries are the children and youth, who now have safe spaces to play and grow. 🤸♀️👦👧 No more unhygienic play areas, no more dirty bottles, and certainly no more injuries from broken glass. 🏞️🍼🚫 However, it doesn't end there!
