Mazars consulting partner Liam McKenna took part in a panel discussion at the launch event this week for latest Irish Business and Human Rights benchmark report published by the Trinity Centre for Social Innovation (CSI). The report assesses the human rights performance of 50 of the largest publicly listed companies operating in Ireland and 10 of the largest semi-states using the internationally recognised Corporate Human Rights Benchmark methodology. 86% of the top 50 companies in the sample scored below 50% and around half scored 30% or less. Prof Mary Lee Rhodes, one of the authors of the report, outlined the importance of the findings within the current context of business and human rights: "With EU legislation coming soon that will require firms to up their performance in this area, this report should be required reading for Irish-based executives and policy makers in 2024.” Mary Whitelaw Mary Lawlor Benn Hogan #CorporateResponsibility #HumanRightsInBusiness

As Business and Human Rights lawyers and practitioners, we reaffirm our endorsement of the #CSDDD and urge all Member States of the European Union to endorse, on March 15th, the latest compromise proposed by the Belgian Presidency of the Council of the EU. Despite acknowledging its notable reduction in scope, we, who daily confront the practical complexities of due diligence alongside corporations, academic institutions, NGOs, and government bodies on a daily basis, stress the necessity for a unified framework and legal certainty, viewing it as a crucial step toward social justice. #CS3D #bizhumanrights #humanrights #savethecsddd https://lnkd.in/duMEQmmk

Check out our newly updated Toolkit for National Action Plans on Business and Human Rights. We are launching a 2024 edition of our Toolkit, which provides practical step-by-step guidance to develop and implement a National Action Plan (#NAP) aligned with a human rights-based approach. National Action Plans are an important way for States to implement the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (#UNGPs). The Toolkit situates National Action Plans within the evolving business and human rights landscape, highlights the role of national baseline assessments, and explores how National Action Plans can support and complement the implementation of human rights due diligence legislation like the #CSDDD. Importantly, the Toolkit highlights recent real-life good practice examples and innovative approaches. It also highlights challenges faced by those working with National Action Plans, and lessons learned addressing these. The toolkit can be used by governments but also by National Human Rights Institutions, businesses, civil society organisations, trade unions, academics, the media and others when engaging with the development and implementation of National Action Plans. The Toolkit can be accessed in English below or through the link in comments, where you can also find a Spanish and French version.

On Friday, April 5th, the Council of Ministers approved the new national action plan for business and human rights spanning from 2024 to 2029. This plan, co-proposed by Minister for Foreign Affairs Hadja Lahbib and myself, targets both Belgian companies operating domestically and abroad, as well as international companies conducting business within our borders. Through its 'mirror clause' approach, the plan aims to actively engage and support companies in upholding and advancing human rights. In 2011, the United Nations Human Rights Council adopted the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights. These principles were crafted to raise awareness regarding the adverse impact of corporate activities on human rights and to establish appropriate avenues for redress. They also sought to delineate the roles and responsibilities of both states and corporations in mitigating human rights violations. In response, the UN Working Group on Business and Human Rights urged all member states to develop and implement a National Action Plan (NAP) on Business and Human Rights. Belgium had already embarked on this path by adopting its initial NAP in 2017. Subsequently, in March 2021, the federal and regional governments, through the Foreign Policy Coordination Committee, resolved to draft a second National Action Plan on Business and Human Rights. While I had hoped for an even more ambitious plan, I applaud this significant stride forward. It represents a crucial measure in mitigating the adverse impacts of both Belgian and foreign enterprises operating within our jurisdiction on human rights and the environment across the entire value chain. The integration of sustainability and respect for human rights is pivotal in shaping an economy befitting the demands of the 21st century. More on https://lnkd.in/e5ttjHFw
