Watched some Wildcard games this weekend. Really impressed with the role noise played for Green Bay and Detroit wins. The fans were on fire.🏈 It reminded me of a concept I learned in Telecom 101-signal to noise ratio. This ratio compares the desired level signal to the amount of noise. 📶 In other words the signal has to be strong enough and persistent enough 📢 to get through the noise. Great metaphor for so many things—getting through the noise of starting a company, raising $, launching a product, finding product market fit, go to market, building a team, strategic clarity. All of it. Persistence, intensity, strength—required.

As fall approaches, I thought it’d be fun to share where some of the biggest late Q3/Q4 games stand, according to mindGAME Data. What game(s) will dominate? Are there surprise hits on the horizon? Winners: Activision's Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 is clearly leading the pack, with three more months to build demand before its release. Electronic Arts (EA)' EA Sports FC 25 is also gaining momentum and is poised to be a top seller this fall and winter. Surprises: I didn’t have Bandai Namco Entertainment America Inc. Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero on my "what’s going to be big in 2024" list, but this game is thriving post-Summer Game Fest. It’s shaping up to be a global hit, with strong demand across the US, EU, APAC, and LATAM. Things to watch: UFL, a free-to-play soccer game, is releasing just before EA Sports FC. Electronic Arts has plans to let go 5% of its total global staff, or roughly 670 individuals.In a note sent to staff, CEO Andrew Wilson said that EA is reacting to "accelerating industry transformation where player needs and motivations and changed significantly." Crucially, EA also said that it is "moving away from the development of future licensed IP." EA currently has several confirmed Star Wars and Marvel games in development, including a third Jedi game, Black Panther, and Iron Man. According to Wilson, EA will double down on owned IP, sports, and "massive online communities." 📊 During the 24Q4 investor call, Warner Bros announced that revenue from games had experienced a steep decline, falling 41% YoY. Following these weak results, JB Perrette, the president of global streaming and games at WB, emphasized the importance of free-to-play games while hinting at the company's future direction. 🎮 "One of the areas we are particularly leaning into, which is about half of the $200 billion games business, is the free-to-play space." Warner has already started moving in this direction with their acquisition of ‘Player First’ last month. This move aims to "strengthen capabilities" in free-to-play games while providing "more balance to the internal games business from the inevitable cyclicality of console-based releases". 💡 While it's too early to predict WB's next F2P adventure after MultiVersus, the company clearly recognizes the huge potential in this ever-evolving field.
