How Government Built America challenges growing, anti-government rhetoric by highlighting the role government has played in partnering with markets to build the United States. Sidney A. Shapiro and Joseph P. Tomain explore how markets can harm and fail the country, and how the government has addressed these extremes by restoring essential values to benefit all citizens. Without denying that individualism and small government are part of the national DNA, the authors demonstrate how democracy and a people pursuing communal interests are equally important. In highly engaging prose, the authors describe how the government, despite the complexity of markets, remains engaged in promoting economic prosperity, protecting people, and providing an economic safety net. Federal laws and Executive directives require agencies to frequently consult with the public to shape policies and actions. However, these consultation efforts may be perceived as inaccessible or disconnected from stakeholder interests and priorities. The White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) wants your ideas to develop a Federal framework, guidelines, and leading practices for public participation and community engagement (PPCE) activities to help Federal agencies more broadly and meaningfully engage with you and your communities. PPCE activities include notice and comment processes, Requests for Information, consultations, listening sessions, customer feedback surveys, user research, crowdsourcing, and other activities carried out by Federal agencies to consult with the public to inform regulations, policies, program and service design, and other actions. OMB seeks feedback on: • Experiences of individuals and organizations, including from underserved communities, with participating in Federal Government PPCE activities that inform government decision-making; • Content (e.g., methods, approaches, tools, and practices) to incorporate in a Federal framework for PPCE; and • How OMB might continue to pursue a collaborative process to co-develop such a framework with the public. ** Leveraging Data for Action: Lessons from Allegheny County at the NIJ Conference** Too often, we delay action, waiting for more data without asking, "What are we doing with what we already have?" The National Institute of Justice (NIJ) is the research, development, and evaluation agency of the U.S. Department of Justice. This year, they're holding their conference in Pittsburgh, and I'm excited to join a panel (with Erin Dalton) to showcase the incredible work happening in Allegheny County using data science to advance across a range of areas including pre-trial reform. While many think Allegheny is a unicorn because of their integrated data, the real superpower lies in their willingness to act on the messy data they have, rather than waiting for the perfect data they don't have. Hoping to see local government folks at NIJ, ready to be inspired to take action now with their data assets. #NIJ2024 #DataScience #PreTrialReform #LocalGovernment
