The problem is what constitutes DE&I success. The other question is whether the need for DE&I initiatives will always exist, or is the goal not to need them. I would think that the ideal would be an organization that has diversity, equity and inclusion without a department to manage it. In other words, it becomes an organic part of the organization.

Here's some insight that helps to answer not only the thinking behind Tenor's name but also what drives us.

I really enjoyed speaking to a packed room of over 80 professionals last night at this event in Toronto about diversity, equity and inclusion in the legal profession. It was a pleasure to hear from and get to know the other panelists - Qadira Jackson, Devin Persaud, Kyle Elliott, Christopher Sweeney (who very much positioned himself as there to learn, which I really appreciated!) - and Pako Tshiamala and Lisa Tan were great moderators. But my favourite part was connecting with attendees before and after the panel discussion. Many approached me after to say they appreciated my message that more lawyers should consider striking out on their own, if they are not getting the support and recognition they deserve at law firms or other legal workplaces. I really mean it when I say I never thought I'd set up my own solo practice and that it would actually be successful. And yet, here I am, thriving and poised to take the next steps to build a team around me. I don't imagine I'll ever rival established law firms in Ottawa or Toronto or elsewhere, but that's not even my goal. I just want to love my work, build deep and lasting relationships with great clients, mentor others as much as I can, and build referral networks with lawyers, paralegals, law clerks, etc. from communities that have been and continue to be marginalized by the "established" legal community, as well those who prove to be true allies. Ok, that sounds like a lot, but that's what I want! I really hope others give it a shot. Spotlighting Our Firm’s Very Own History-Maker: Alia Adkins-Derrick   What is your most notable professional accomplishment/triumph? Serving as the Course Director of the Texas Bar’s 2023 Civil Appellate Practice’s 101 CLE Course. Turns out, I was the first ever Black American, man or women, to ever serve in that role. It’s an honor that still amazes me to this day! I’m so glad that I answered the call of rock star Appellate Attorney Dylan Drummond who believed in my ability to lead.   What is your most rewarding professional achievement?  Making a difference. When I founded Adkins Lawyers, PLLC back in 2015, I did so with one goal in mind: make a difference for firm clients and personnel. For our clients, we do so by providing big firm legal expertise, smart solutions, and a strong legal defense without the big firm price tag. For our firm personnel, we do so by championing a diverse workplace where integrity, mutual respect, and results matter. Nine years in and we have not lost that commitment.
