Sustainability is vital when it comes to process transformation. An ill-considered change that cannot be met and supported by adequate human resources will quickly fall over. A change where all key stakeholders have not been suitably engaged will also struggle. Sustainability can often be overlooked in favour of shorter-term fixes, often costing more and causing greater issues than intended. We must always consider how to sustain change so that it remains impactful and meaningful. A series of ill-considered changes can easily cause people to disengage.

Over the past few years, I've been fortunate to collaborate with clients who don't just incorporate sustainability; they embody it in their essence, weaving it into the fabric of their operations. Sustainable business practices are strategies and actions implemented by organisations to operate in a manner that a) minimises negative impacts on the environment, society, and economy, while b) also ensuring long-term viability and success. It’s a challenging balance to get right but it’s vital that businesses take their responsibility seriously. Leaders need to value and be genuinely committed to the goal of sustainability. Superficial sustainability practices (like “greenwashing”, token gestures, cosmetic changes and short-term initiatives) may provide a veneer of environmental or social responsibility, but they often lack substance or long-term impact. Genuine sustainability requires a holistic approach that addresses the root causes of environmental and social challenges and involves meaningful changes throughout the organisation's operations, supply chain, and corporate culture: Environmental Stewardship: Sustainable businesses strive to minimise their ecological footprint by reducing waste, conserving resources, and mitigating pollution. This may involve adopting renewable energy sources, implementing recycling programs, and using eco-friendly materials and production processes. Social Responsibility: Sustainable businesses prioritise the well-being of their stakeholders, including employees, customers, communities, and society at large. They uphold ethical labour practices, ensure workplace health and safety, and foster diversity and inclusivity. Additionally, they engage in philanthropic activities and contribute positively to the communities in which they operate. Economic Viability: Sustainable businesses recognise the importance of financial stability and long-term profitability. They integrate sustainability into their business models and decision-making processes while also considering the broader impact on society and the environment. As we head in #NYCClimateWeek and we reflect on its theme "it's time", we could not agree more. Sustainability reports and action plans need to be operationalized and implemented. ▶ Implementing sustainability plans is only possible through an #empowered workforce (i.e., one that is equipped with the #knowledge and #tools to effect change within an organization). ▶ Some argue that sustainability should not be considered the responsibility of a department within an organization but rather the responsibility of all employees. Every job is a sustainability job. ▶ With the plethora of sustainability programs and courses, it could be confusing to choose the right one for your workforce.
