Founding Director at The Place Bureau * Place Futures * Urban Research * Cultural Strategy * Destination Design *
We're looking for great examples of cultural projects around the world that have used a 'meanwhile use' or festival-based approach to test out ideas and establish a cultural destination for the longer term. Do you know of... * Any art museums that have started out as festivals? * Any foundations that have emerged from a programme-driven model? * Any destinations that had a strong participatory or co-design model? They can be large or small. A couple that spring to mind as inspiration include Derby's Museum of Making, National Museums Liverpool Sunrise to Sunset festival, and Nantes as a city-wide approach to festivals that established longer term destinations... Ideas and examples welcome! Petra Marko Carl Turner Juliette Rizzi Aki Carpenter Allison Louis Walker Catherine Botibol Sam O. This phenomenon highlights the power of architecture not only as a functional structure but also as a catalyst for tourism, investment, and urban development. The Bilbao Effect underscores the potential of innovative design to reshape perceptions, attract visitors, and stimulate socio-economic growth, making it a fascinating subject for urban planners, architects, and policymakers alike. Could embracing this phenomenon opens doors to a future where architecture becomes a catalyst for inclusive growth? How do you think cities can leverage architectural landmarks to drive sustainable growth and community development in today's rapidly changing urban landscape?

The ‘coolness’ factor is real 😎 We know research shows that museum visitorship depends on a multitude of factors. One of which is museum ‘coolness’ — or how ‘cool’ individuals perceive a museum space. Scholars in Portugal reveal that “museum’s décor, permanent displays, facilities, and colours” (Loureiro & Blanca, 2021) are some of the most important cues to ‘coolness.’ What do you think? How cool is cARTie? [Image Description: A dark green brushstroke is overlaid atop a bright green background. The words “MUSEUM 'COOLNESS' MATTERS TO DEEPENING RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN VISITORS AND MUSEUMS (LOUREIRO & BLANCO, 2021)” are written in white.] #museumcoolness #museumsmatter #cARTieInspired

Half of the most-visited museums worldwide in 2022 were situated in the United Kingdom or the United States according to the most recent issue of the Theme Index and Museum Index report by the Themed Entertainment Association and researchers at AECOM. However, the Louvre remained at the top with 7.7 million annual visitors. The Parisian art museum, probably best known for housing da Vinci's Mona Lisa, has ranked first regarding attendance since the 2012 edition of the report started including museums, with one exception in 2016. Even with the overall visitor numbers recovering from the coronavirus pandemic dip, almost all top-ranking museums still struggle to reach pre-pandemic attendance numbers. For example, in 2019, 9.6 million people visited the Louvre. The 7.7-million figure from 2022 therefore represents a 20 percent decrease compared to the last year before the classification of COVID-19 as a pandemic, even though numbers increased by 173 percent between 2021 and 2022.
