Barrick has continued to focus on extending the life of its Kibali gold mine in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) with world class exploration and resource conversion programs. Recent high-grade discoveries at Barrick Gold’s Kibali mine in the DRC demonstrates the potential for further brownfields exploration and extending the life of mine to more than 15 years. Furthermore, the potential for significant discoveries along what Barrick refers to as the KZ trend, which is within trucking distance of the current Kibali plant, is extremely high. According to Barrick’s most recent presentation, the KZ trend stretches north, north-west of current operations for more than 50km. Furthermore, about 90% of the KZ structure outside the KCD area where current operations are located, remain untested below 150m vertical depth. The exploration maturity at Kibali is low compared to other global gold districts like Yilgarn in Western Australia and the Superior Province in Canada.   According to Barrick President and CEO Mark Bristow, Kibali continues to deliver growth as its strong record of replenishing reserves and resources through exploration, and further investment in technology and capacity, position it to sustain its 750,000 ounces annual production past the current 10-year horizon to 15 years and beyond. #CDH's Doing Business in South Africa (DBSA) annual publication highlights important aspects relating to the legal requirements affecting the mining and minerals industry. The DBSA publication focuses on various aspects such as the rights of communities, state and contractual royalties, BEE under the mining charter, and beneficiation. The chapter on Beneficiation highlights that in June 2011, the government adopted a beneficiation strategy for the minerals industry. The beneficiation strategy provides a framework that seeks to translate the country's comparative advantage inherited from mineral resources endowment to a national competitive advantage. The strategy is aligned with a national industrialisation programme, which seeks to enhance the quantity and quality of exports and promote the creation of decent employment and diversification of the economy. It is anchored on a range of legislation and policies such as the Minerals and Mining Policy for South Africa (1998). It will also advance the objectives of the MPRDA, the 2010 Charter and the 2018 Charter, the Precious Metals Act 37 of 2005, the Diamonds Amendment Act 29 of 2005, the energy growth plan as well as compliance with environmental protocols. #Zambia stands out among #African countries for its abundant #mineralresources, notably #copper and #criticalminerals such as #cobalt, #manganese, #uranium, and #nickel. It is one of the world's largest producers of copper, and mining has been the backbone of Zambia’s economy for decades. The study aims to examine the alignment of Zambia's mining #laws and policies with the principles of both the AMV and the African Continental Free Trade Area Agreement (‘AfCTA’). The objective of this assessment, therefore, is to map the governance initiatives and approaches in Zambia to sustainable management of mineral resources as a representation of the economic and geographic area. This report was produced with the technical support of the EU-TAF support to the AfCFTA and the African Minerals Development Centre (AMDC). New discoveries of critical minerals in Africa were highlighted at the recent Future Minerals Forum 2024, held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Amongst others, significant discoveries of lithium and cobalt in countries like Mali and Namibia fuelled excitement for investment by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.  The forum also saw some concerns about social and environmental impacts being raised.
