AstraZeneca’s Healthy Heart Africa programme was established in 2014 as a response to Africa’s increasing burden of cardiovascular diseases. Over the past decade, the programme has expanded into 9 African countries, screening more than 54.4 million people for high blood pressure, training more than 11,480 healthcare workers, and activating 1,516 healthcare facilities to provide hypertension services. These efforts have identified more than 10.8 million people with high blood pressure by mid-2024, while driving patients to diagnosis linked to evidence-based treatment. In line with AstraZeneca's commitment to promoting health equity and supporting regional strategies and goals, the Healthy Heart Africa programme has evolved to include capacity and capability building, investment in improved screening and diagnostics, and the integration of screening for chronic kidney disease (CKD) to address a broader spectrum of non-communicable diseases (NCDs). To ensure a comprehensive approach to NCDs, including CKD, AstraZeneca continues to work collaboratively with local, national, and international partners and stakeholders, including government bodies, patient groups, and non-governmental organisations. HHA will expand to new countries in Northern Africa to align with global health objectives and reinforce the programme's commitment to promoting health equity and supporting regional strategies and goals. 🌍 Addressing the Growing Burden of COPD in Sub-Saharan Africa 🌍 At ARNcd, we are deeply committed to advancing respiratory health in Africa. A study in The Lancet reveals a concerning trend in Sub-Saharan Africa, emphasizing the urgent need for collective action in combating Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). 📊 Key Findings: In 2019, all-age prevalent cases of COPD in SSA reached 10.3 million, marking a staggering 117% increase since 1990. From 1990 to 2019, the region experienced a significant rise in all-age Years Lived with Disability (YLDs) due to COPD, ranging from 41% to 203% across different countries. Central SSA reported the largest premature mortality with 729 subjects, and Lesotho recorded the highest rate of Disability-Adjusted Life Years (DALYs) attributable to COPD. 🔍 Insights: Household air pollution from solid fuel emerged as the primary contributor to age-standardized YLDs, death rate, and DALYs rate per 100,000. 🌐 Implications: These findings underscore the critical importance of addressing COPD in Sub-Saharan Africa. ARNcd is dedicated to driving initiatives that promote awareness, education, and access to respiratory healthcare solutions. 🤝 Call to Action: As we navigate these challenges, collaboration is key. We invite healthcare professionals, policymakers, and organizations to join hands with ARNcd in developing innovative strategies, promoting research, and implementing interventions to alleviate the burden of COPD in the region. 💡 Together, we can make a difference. Let's breathe life into the fight against COPD in Africa! 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙘𝙤𝙨𝙩 𝙤𝙛 𝙤𝙗𝙚𝙨𝙞𝙩𝙮 𝙞𝙣 𝙀𝙪𝙧𝙤𝙥𝙚 𝙞𝙨 𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙟𝙚𝙘𝙩𝙚𝙙 𝙩𝙤 𝙨𝙠𝙮𝙧𝙤𝙘𝙠𝙚𝙩 𝙩𝙤 𝙖𝙡𝙢𝙤𝙨𝙩 €1,6 𝙗𝙞𝙡𝙡𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙗𝙮 2030 The economic and health impacts of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are a serious concern for Europe. Policymakers should act fast to address this growing burden on healthcare systems and the economy. In an article he wrote for The Parliament magazine, Executive Vice President and President of Eli Lilly and Company, Ilya Yuffa raises a few Key Concerns, among which are: - Obesity, type-2 diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases are interconnected NCDs posing a significant threat. - The cost of obesity in Europe is projected to skyrocket from €475 billion in 2020 to €1,597 billion by 2030. - Diabetes already costs the EU approximately €104 billion annually in healthcare expenses, with an additional €65 billion lost in productivity. - Cardiovascular disease further burdens the EU with an estimated annual cost of €282 billion. Mr. Yuffa also mentions some alarming statistics: 🍭 By 2025, 1 in 4 European adults will be living with obesity, increasing their risk of type-2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and cancer. 5️⃣ 5️⃣ The number of people in the EU with type-2 diabetes is predicted to more than triple by 2050, reaching over 55 million. 💔 Cardiovascular diseases remain the leading cause of death in the EU, claiming 5,000 lives daily. The European Parliament recognizes the need for a comprehensive approach to NCDs, similar to the successful cancer plan. An integrated strategy involving early diagnosis, timely treatment, and a focus on interconnected risk factors is crucial. We strongly support investing in preventative measures (that start with good rapid and early diagnostics, such as SkillCell’s IDIR test) and providing healthcare providers with the necessary resources will be essential to improving health outcomes and protecting European citizens. #DiabetesTuesday #MetabolicHealth #Type2Diabetes

Timely detection of Atrial Fibrillation (AF) is crucial to safeguard patients from the consequences of arrhythmia and the progression of AF into fatal conditions. The chronic nature of AF, the need for lifetime clinical follow-up, as well as the volume of hospitalizations and long-term treatments, present a significant economic burden for health systems and societies. This is why raising awareness of AF, the symptoms, risk factors and common comorbidities, among primary care physicians is essential to improve early detection to avoid adverse outcomes amongst patients. The Economist's latest report, supported by Johnson & Johnson, titled: Undetected and undertreated: Shaping policy on atrial fibrillation in Saudi Arabia” https://lnkd.in/d3aKv8WT #mycompany #atrialfibrillation #JNJMedTech

Professor of Global Migration, Ethnicity & Health & Vice President EUPHA Section for Migrant and Ethnic Minority Health
We have just got a paper published in a very important journal PLOS Medicine on Risk of long COVID and associated symptoms among migrants & ethnic minorities in Denmark using a nationwide register-linked cohort. The key findings are that: - People of North African, Middle Eastern, Eastern European, and Asian origins had a higher risk of long COVID diagnosis than native Danes, with the greatest ethnic disparities being observed in the early phase of COVID-19 pandemic (January 2020 to June 2021). - People of North African, Middle Eastern, Eastern European, and Asian origins were more likely to report cardiopulmonary symptoms and any long COVID symptoms than native Danes, especially beyond 4 weeks to 6 months after COVID-19 diagnosis. These findings indicate the need to understand the drivers of long COVID in migrant & ethnic minorities and tailor preventive policies to their context.
