1/ USDA USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS)'s Center for Veterinary Biologics put out a request for information from vaccine manufacturers to make H5N1 bird flu vaccines for cattle. This is essential preliminary market research. https://lnkd.in/eqHE4Ntf 2/ But there is concern that farmers may not want to use H5N1 bird flu vaccines because of the potential impacts on their ability to export cattle, beef & dairy products. 3/ H5N1 bird flu vaccination is unlikely to prevent all infections in poultry or cattle, but could help mitigate disease severity (e.g. impact on milk production) & curb (but not eliminate) transmission. 4/ The USDA & other countries restrict importation of animals & animal products where there's been vaccination against avian flu, foot-and-mouth disease, etc. https://lnkd.in/ePiTFxHi 5/ The challenge is distinguishing between antibody positivity from vaccination vs infection (could be done with the right antibodies and/or the addition of PCR). 6/ The US has historically non-scientifically & politically implemented restrictions on animal & animal product imports from countries where there's been vaccination for diseases like bird flu. You can imagine there might be some tit-for-tat.

In many cases, vaccinated animals / poultry birds develop antibodies against the pathogen, making it difficult to differentiate between vaccinated and infected animals / poultry birds using traditional diagnostic methods. A tool to differentiate between these vaccinated and infected animals / poultry birds would be a great feature for any potential vaccine manufacturer. DIVA PCR (Differentiating Infected from Vaccinated Animals Polymerase Chain Reaction) helps address this issue. It is used in veterinary healthcare to distinguish between animals / poultry birds that are infected with a specific pathogen and those that have been vaccinated against it. The first step is detecting Specific Genetic Markers that are only present in the pathogen, allowing for a more accurate diagnosis. Data on the percentage of Wild Type Strain & Vaccine Strain in the flock indicates about the efficacy of the vaccination program. Next step is to use these data for Disease Control & Prevention Programs in veterinary healthcare, particularly in scenarios where vaccination is used as a solution to control or eradicate a particular disease. That’s why DIVA PCR works as a boon and helps Veterinarians and Animal Health Professionals to make vital decisions regarding disease management and control strategies. Get a broader and clear picture with DIVA PCR. Virbac India have launched Dalguban N+ Vaccine against Newcastle Disease, which gives direct protection against Genotype-VII which is prevalent in India since 2012, while the other conventional ND live vaccine available in India market are not able to provide effective protection against the circulating ND strains ( Major reason is GENOTYPE UMATCHED VACCINE). Dalguban N+ is a specialized vaccine have ICPI - 0 (Intra Cerebral Pathogenecity Index) so it is safe and stress free for the poultry birds and providing excellent protection against the currently circulating ND strains in India. #virbac #poultryindustry #poultryhealth #poultryproduction #poultryfarming #poultryvaccine #newcastledisease #DalgubanN+ #veterinarian #poultryveterinarian

Finland is initiating a vaccination program against bird flu for select high-risk groups, such as poultry farmers, veterinarians, and workers on fur farms, due to the spread of the H5N1 avian influenza among farmed and wild animals. This proactive measure aims to mitigate the risk of the virus transmitting to humans, particularly those frequently in contact with infected animals, and represents a significant step as Finland becomes the first country to adopt such an approach.

Did you know that veterinary vaccines are as vital as human vaccines? Why do they get less attention? Let’s examine some key points with examples: 1/ Public Awareness: While vaccines like the COVID-19 shots are widely discussed, veterinary vaccines, such as those for canine parvovirus or feline leukemia, often stay within pet owner and veterinary circles. 2/ Economic Impact: Human health sees billions in spending globally, with extensive research and development for vaccines like those for measles. In contrast, investment in animal health, though significant, does not match these levels, affecting veterinary vaccine development. 3/ Zoonotic Diseases: Vaccines that prevent rabies and avian flu in animals are crucial for preventing these diseases in humans. However, their impact on public health isn’t as widely acknowledged. 4/ Biodiversity and Conservation: Wildlife vaccines protect endangered species like the Black-footed Ferret from diseases such as canine distemper. These efforts are vital for conservation but don’t often make headlines. Despite their critical roles, veterinary vaccines don’t receive as much attention or resources as human vaccines. What can we do to change this? #veterinary #vaccine

The ongoing discussions around highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) vaccinations in the poultry industry offer a moment for reflection on what matters most to consumers. Safety and innovation in our food systems are paramount. The dedication to biosecurity measures, as highlighted by industry experts at the recent Poultry Tech Summit, underscores a commitment to safeguarding not just the birds but also the integrity of what arrives on consumers' tables. Understanding the intricacies of HPAI vaccinations and the emphasis on biosecurity shows the industry's proactive measures to ensure the health of poultry which, in turn, influences the quality and safety of the products we consume. This approach resonates with the consumer's desire for transparency and trust in the food chain. For producers, embracing these challenges and innovations presents an opportunity to lead with responsibility, ensuring that the industry not only survives but thrives in harmony with consumer expectations. As we look towards a future where technology and tradition blend to enhance food security, let's champion the collective efforts aimed at maintaining the balance of safety, sustainability, and satisfaction. #PoultryIndustry #FoodSafety #Biosecurity #SustainableEating #InnovationInAgriculture
Until a consensus is reached on HPAI vaccination in commercial poultry, biosecurity will stay a crucial component of any control program. Learn More: https://lnkd.in/gQ4E3PMj #PoultryTechSummit #AvianFlu #PoultryHealth #AgriTech #Poultry #PoultryIndustry
