Young professionals are perfect! That's what the business world thinks as evidenced by the facts related to the ages of new hires according to the Federal Manager's Daily Report: "Specifically, while only 7 percent of current workers are under age 30, 27 percent of new hires are in that age band, and for the 30-39 age band, the figures are 23 and 33 percent, respectively. In contrast, only 14 percent of new hires are ages 50-59 and only 3 percent are ages 60-69, while those age bands account for 30 and 13 percent of current workers, respectively". That is in spite of the benefit of hiring a not-as-young person is that the company not only gets someone with more experience, but their maturity usually comes with a calm demeanor, thus with less drama and egocentrism. Just something to consider if in need of hiring someone! Another Thought Provoker. Are "Quiet" people an untapped resource?

Emerson Wins Award at Texas Workforce Conference Sherman – Workforce Solutions Texoma (WFST) is proud to recognize Emerson Process Management as Texoma’s 2023 Local Employer of Excellence. Emerson accepted the award at the Texas Workforce Commission's 26th Annual Conference last week in Houston. WFST also nominated Emerson for the Large Employer of the Year and was excited to discover that Emerson was recognized as one of the top 3 finalists for the Large Employer of the Year Award. Through industry tours for youth and parents, Emerson promoted an awareness campaign for local industries to educate students, parents and teachers about viable careers. After a study of local employer needs indicated a shortage of middle skill workers, Emerson offered to serve on the task force to implement programs to increase the labor force for these sectors. Emerson Regional Operations Manager, Mark Anderson, chairs the Texoma Workforce Initiative which was founded to create a pipeline of middle skills workers in the manufacturing and healthcare sectors.  Emerson often hosts 240 students for the Workforce Board’s Manufacturing Day. Emerson not only hosts the tours but allows students to have lunch with plant managers, supervisors and workers so they can get the inside story about manufacturing. Emerson is directly responsible for leading a campaign that has raised over $3 million for the Advanced Manufacturing Program for high school students. Emerson is a generous community partner supporting numerous charities and local schools. Each year, they go to Washington Elementary with truckloads of school supplies for needy students. Throughout the year, they donate food baskets/gifts and support multiple fundraisers.  Emerson has promoted hiring veterans, people with disabilities and individuals who have completed second chance programs. “Local partnerships between employers, workforce boards, and educational institutions are critical to the success of the Texas workforce,” said TWC Chairman Bryan Daniel. “These collaborations allow employers to continue to have the skilled workforce they need and for individuals to get good-paying jobs.” “As we continue to strengthen our partnerships with business leaders, it is one of many steps in building career pathways that will continue the Lone Star State’s economic momentum,” said TWC Commissioner Representing Labor Alberto Treviño III. “The talent pool in Texas is stronger than ever thanks to the commitment and partnerships between businesses and Workforce Solutions.” “Texas employers know the Lone Star State is the best place to start and grow a business,” said TWC Commissioner Representing Employers Joe Esparza. “The Employer of Excellence Award is a tremendous achievement for Texas employers like Emerson to showcase their dedication to employees in the number one state in the nation.”

Overheard last week at Hear Me Out Listening Party: “Technically, I was fired. They have their narrative, but I have mine, and I’m blogging about it.” Gone are the days when employers had the sole power to shape the story of a termination or conflict. Platforms like Substack and Tiktok enable employees to present their own versions of events and challenge this power dynamic. What’s more, an increasing number of Gen Z and Millennials are abandoning full-time work for what April Rinne calls a “career portfolio.” As they embrace multiple income streams and diverse professional roles, employees are less dependent on a single employer’s narrative. This independence allows for more authentic and nuanced storytelling about their career journey—including setbacks and conflicts. But it also puts pressure on employers to develop more transparent and fair workplace cultures. When former employees are posting negative experiences for clout, a narrative that goes viral can take on a life of its own. Do you know anyone who left their job recently? What’s their narrative?

I got some lovely feedback on the Marketing role I posted yesterday, especially one particular section -- and it's my favourite bit, too.   It's the 'Day In the Life' section. I remember the first time I saw this in a job ad. I'd always felt that SO MUCH human misery was caused by people doing a job that isn't a good fit for them as a person. Not a bad job necessarily, just not right for that person. I'd seen it in my friends, I'd felt it in myself. As an employer, I just didn't know what to do about it. How to attract the right fit people and dissuade the wrong ones? The problem, I realised, is that most job ads tell you *nothing* about what a job is actually going to feel like day to day. I realised this in the same moment I first saw a 'Day In the Life' section. Immediately loved it, stole it (thanks Dan Murray-Serter 🧠), implemented it at Koru Kids. The beauty of the Day In The Life section is that it helps people understand what a job is actually going to be like. When writing one, the key is to NOT sugar-coat. It should include mundane tasks, repetition - you know, reality. The whole point is to make people who will hate that job realise it before applying. And to attract people who relish the kind of challenge you're offering.   At Koru Kids we now try so hard to bring our roles to life - experiential interviews and tests, voice notes on our careers page - all to try to avoid this avoidable human misery.
