Intrinsic to the notion of resilience is equity for the whole community within a balanced ecology. The transformation of the heritage listed Bendigo Botanic Gardens focuses on creating Larni Garingilang, a new community hub, embedded within and connected to a Garden for the Future. The botanical concept looks to the future, guided by the Traditional Owners, through reconnection to the pre-colonial state of the environment to remediate the damaged land. A sense of community is cultivated through the integration of cultural and educational opportunities within our design. Six Indigenous garden beds represent the seasons observed by the Dja Dja Wurrung people, showcasing traditional bush tucker species. These elements provide year-round learning experiences that deepen visitors' appreciation for the region’s ecological and cultural history. Our design significantly contributes to environmental sustainability by incorporating a comprehensive water capture and reuse system that efficiently manages stormwater. This sustainable water system nourishes the gardens, creating a vibrant public space where the community can enjoy bike rides, peaceful walks and find a place of respite amidst nature. Through collaboration with Traditional Owners and the community, we created a design that fosters a connection between people and the natural landscape. The Larni Garingilang Central Hub is a testament to the power of design in creating resilient community spaces, thoughtfully preserving the site’s history while fostering understanding for present and future generations. It’s not often that historic and modern architecture come together, but that’s exactly what’s happened in Port Chalmers.   A contemporary office building for Port Otago now wraps around the heritage Port Chalmers Maritime Museum, connecting past and present through a glass extension and internal laneways.   The museum, a traditional stone structure and local landmark since 1877, continues to stand proudly at the end of the town’s main street.   The Otago Daily Times shares more about this project in their recent article. We’re proud to have been part of the interior fit-out for Port Otago’s head office, creating a vibrant and welcoming space designed to foster collaboration and promote a sense of belonging for staff and visitors.   🔗 To learn more, read the Otago Daily Times’s article, please note that access may require subscription: https://lnkd.in/givKM7dJ Alternatively, you can explore the project in more detail on our website: https://lnkd.in/geVrrwvM

The rejuvenation of Beverley Town Centre, one of Western Australia's oldest towns, strengthens community resilience and promotes environmental sustainability, blending modern urban needs with a deep respect for the town’s rich heritage. Collaborating with the Shire of Beverley and Water Corporation, we implemented principles to manage and treat stormwater runoff, promoting long-term ecological health. Native trees were chosen and strategically positioned to provide cooling shade without disrupting heritage infrastructure, reducing urban heat to create comfortable public spaces. Locally sourced boulders and materials were chosen for their durability, minimal maintenance and low greenhouse gas emissions. Safe and accessible pedestrian crossings, seating areas and permanent alfresco dining spaces enhance the town’s liveability, promoting walkability and spaces for community connection. The project was completed just in time for the Beverley Festival, celebrating the town's 150-year milestone and further strengthening community pride. Beverley Town Centre is rejuvenated with a design that balances modern urban needs and respects historical significance, creating a resilient and adaptable town centre that will serve both people and nature for generations to come.
