This week is World Immunization Week – April 24-30, 2024 – coordinated by the World Health Organization (WHO). This year’s theme is ‘Humanly Possible’, which marks 50 years of the WHO Expanded Program on Immunization that recognises the collective efforts to save, & improve countless lives from vaccine-preventable diseases, & calls upon countries to increase their investment in immunisation programs to help protect the next generations. The World Health Organization (WHO) considers immunisation to be the most effective medical intervention available to prevent deaths & reduce disease in our communities. Immunisation is a key component of primary health care & an indisputable human right. Immunisation programs prevent about 2.5 million deaths globally each year. Through its convening power, WHO works with countries across worldwide to raise awareness of the value of vaccines & immunisation, & to ensure governments obtain the necessary guidance & technical support to implement high quality immunisation programs. The World Health Assembly, with the support of countries & partners, has endorsed a new global vision & strategy, called the Immunization Agenda 2030 (IA2030), to address these challenges over the next decade and save over 50 million lives. By 2030, the immunisation agenda aims to: ·        Halve the number of children missing out on all vaccines; ·        Achieve 90 per cent coverage for essential vaccines administered in children & adolescents; & ·        Introduce 500 new vaccines in low to middle income countries. Immunisation is a safe & effective way to protect against harmful communicable diseases & at the population level, prevent the spread of these diseases in the community. Immunisation is the process of becoming immune to a disease as a result of a vaccine. Vaccination is when you receive a vaccine either by needle or drops in the mouth. We now have vaccines designed to prevent more than 20 life-threatening diseases, enabling people of all ages to lead longer, healthier lives. Of Australian children, 93.16 percent of one-year-olds, 91.24 per cent of two-year-olds & 93.93 per cent of five-year-olds are fully vaccinated. Vaccines remains one of the most successful and cost-effective public health interventions. Vaccination prevents deaths every year in all age groups from diseases like diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis (whooping cough), influenza, measles amongst others. At ACE, we believe in fostering healthy and thriving communities and we trust vaccination as a central component to achieving this goal. In the past few months, we have strengthened vaccination programs by working with Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance , Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and Vital Strategies, to implement key elements such as GIS microplanning, Enumeration of eligible children, baseline immunization surveys, HRH profiling, digital birth reporting and several other high impact interventions. We will continue to advocate for increased vaccine uptake and improved quality of care till vaccine preventable diseases are fully wiped out. This, represents approximately 25 million infants, most of whom live in settings classified by the World Bank as conflict-affected and low-income. To fill this equity gap, these countries should receive support for introducing rubella vaccine. After extensive disruptions to routine immunization programmes during the COVID-19 pandemic, it is essential to ensure that all children are up to date with rubella vaccination, especially those who missed vaccination during the pandemic. Additional strategies to immunize adoles- cents and adults are required to protect against rubella infection throughout life, to ensure that adults of child- bearing age are protected from the risk of an in infant with CRS.

According to PAHO (Pan American Health Organization), vaccination in the Americas has experienced growth while global numbers decline. In 2023, the coverage for the first dose of DTP (Diphtheria-Tetanus-Pertussis) vaccines in the continent rose from 90% to 91%, and the coverage for the third dose increased from 83% to 86%. Additionally, the coverage for the first dose of the measles vaccine reached 85%, up from 83% in 2022. These gains reflect the dedication of the pan american healthcare ecosystem and the success of immunization campaigns, as well as the commitment of the population to oriented vaccination plans. However, challenges remain. Immunization against diseases like polio are still in levels below ideal and the vaccine against dengue are not ideally distributed in countries such as Brazil and Argentina, which recently faced outbreaks of the disease. Therefore, it is crucial that public and private players keep investing in the creation of new immunizers and expansion of the production capacity of existing vaccines. Fostering immunization not only saves lives but also contributes to broader societal benefits, including healthcare cost savings and improved development indicators. Today, as India celebrates National Vaccination Day, it's a poignant reminder of a pivotal moment in our nation's healthcare history. This day holds immense significance as it commemorates the historic milestone when the first dose of the oral polio vaccine was administered, on March 16, 1995, setting in motion a nationwide immunization campaign that has saved countless lives over the years. Did you know that since the launch of the Universal Immunization Program (UIP) in India in 1985, tremendous progress has been made in increasing vaccination coverage? According to recent data from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, UIP now covers vaccines against 12 vaccine-preventable diseases, reaching over 27 million infants annually. National Vaccination Day serves as a beacon of hope, emphasizing the critical importance of immunization in safeguarding public health. Smallpox was a highly contagious and deadly disease that caused millions of deaths worldwide. Through a global vaccination campaign led by the World Health Organization (WHO), routine immunization played a crucial role in eradicating smallpox. Vaccination efforts targeted populations at risk and ensured widespread coverage. The last known natural case of smallpox occurred in 1977, and in 1980, the WHO declared smallpox eradicated, making it the first disease to be eliminated through vaccination. Routine immunization against smallpox has since been discontinued, demonstrating the significant impact that vaccines can have in saving lives and eradicating diseases. #MCCO
