Food deserts and lack of healthy choices due to cost are major factors in health disparities, urban and rural, with contiguous zip codes having > than 20 years longevity disparities (health span/life span) the goals should be to max out longevity for all zip codes, not just a modest life span increase in the areas and populations most in need !
I write a lot about our nation's vast and deeply entrenched health disparities but am also trying to focus on solutions and work that makes a difference. In the spirit of the holidays and hope, here's a story about fantastic work being done by Rush University Medical Center that is closing gaps on short life expectancy in Black communities around the Chicago hospital -- and doing so through work outside the hospital walls. https://lnkd.in/gCSjBCMM

Families are confused by palliative care because we (the collective we) keep referring to it as end-of-life care, and the messaging is 95% about planning for death instead of the quality of LIFE being lived. The quotable Shawshank Redemption rings loudly: "Get busy living, or get busy dying." The term palliative is not approachable for understanding... I'd love to see a rebrand to medically-complex care, or something to that effect. Painting all kids on the severe neurological impact spectrum as imminently dying, when many of them live long, high-quality lives does a disservice to their dignity and personhood. We must be careful with the intention and unintended impact of messaging if we want to build a better comprehensive approach to caring for medically complex children and their families. Care planning, considerations for advanced directives, succession planning, and financial planning are all very important considerations, but let's not lose focus of the terms LIVING and LIFE. #PediatricPalliativeCare #SoapboxoftheDay #QualityofLife

Wealth, not health: For this hospital, closing Chicago's alarming 'death gap' didn't mean more clinics

Following from the recent CMS announcement of the "Birthing-Friendly" designation for hospitals, will "Birthing-Friendly" become the benchmark against which to measure maternal-infant birth outcomes in 2024 and beyond? As a suggestion, researchers should try to ascertain any meaningful relationships among birthing-friendly hospital designations (operationalized as systems-level variables), maternal-infant birth outcomes (operationalized as complicated and uncomplicated births at the unit or departmental level), mother's demographics, and any other relevant data.
All eligible Kaiser Permanente hospitals have been designated Birthing-Friendly by CMS, demonstrating our commitment to delivering safe, high-quality care to moms and babies: https://k-p.li/3NLR0MT
