Do you work with the protein interleukin-1 beta (IL-1B)? We’re running a short survey that will help us establish a replacement World Health Organization International Standard for IL-1B that is more useful and relevant for those who use them. Interested? 🔥 Spotlight on: UK Biobank Only 10 years young and the UK Biobank has made significant progress in enabling people to share their data to benefit the health of generations to come. 🔬 One study that I found interesting from reading the article* was The impact of diabetes on the heart health. By studying people with multiple disease we can begin to understand potential signs for the onset of others diseases. What I find really enticing is the relationship between changes to the shape of the heart (those with diabetes had smaller chambers and thicker muscle in the left ventricle) compared to those without diabetes. ❤️ This British Heart Foundation article describes the mentioned study in more detail: https://lnkd.in/enb47f5a *The other 10 that were highlighted by UK Biobank in their recent post can be seen here: https://lnkd.in/eBUaMWV3 #data #datascience #health #heathcare #science Image created by DALL-E 3

YHEC and Socially Determined recently collaborated on research which was presented by YHEC's Hayden Holmes at ISPOR USA earlier this month. The research analysed the current rates and costs associated with HepC in the US, investigating what potential health benefits and cost reduction savings there could be from using data to inform targeted approaches for disease identification and screening. Socially Determined provided a granular dataset of the US, which enabled the identification of at-risk populations using the social determinants of health. #ISPORAnnual #ISPOR2024

For applied research such as implementation research, you need the engagement of stakeholders (communities you are expecting to benefit), service providers, local and national policymakers. If you don’t have all on board almost right from the beginning, you are never going to do good implementation research which will be robust. There has to be a sense of buy-in, an equitable partnership, willingness and capacity to change, because in many cases that is what we are trying to do." - Morven Roberts, CEO of the Global Alliance for Chronic Diseases (GACD). Morven Roberts highlights the importance of having a collective and collaborative approach in implementation research, during the World Health Organization Non-Communicable Diseases Hard Talk.

I am pleased to share that our book "COVID-19 Disruption and the Global Health Challenges," co-authored with Pasquale Lucio Scandizzo, has been reviewed in the academic journal COVID (COVID 2024, 4, 1186–1187). A key aspect discussed is the importance of the One Health approach, which emphasizes the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health. This holistic view is crucial for understanding and mitigating the impacts of zoonotic diseases, which will likely continue to challenge us in the future. The review emphasizes that the book is not just a record of past events but also offers a hopeful outlook and practical guidance for handling future global health crises. We believe it will be a valuable resource for policymakers, healthcare professionals, and anyone interested in understanding the complex dynamics of pandemics. Thank you to everyone who has supported this work. We hope it is a meaningful contribution to the ongoing dialogue on global health and pandemic preparedness. Known as the ‘silent pandemic’, antimicrobial resistance (AMR) happens when bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens evolve to evade the drugs used to treat them. My colleague Finlay Field has posted this new study, partly funded by the British government, stating that AMR is now responsible for 1.14 million deaths every year – higher than the combined toll of HIV/Aids and malaria. The paper highlights actions to drive progress against AMR, including: Accelerate prevention and control measures, expanding access to new antibiotics and vaccines, clean water, and sanitation – whilst raising public awareness about the dangers of AMR. Work to address the impact of AMR on the health of people and animals, by prioritizing international collaboration in research, surveillance and public health initiatives using a One Health approach. Science can tell wonderful stories - sometimes, those stories are a harder read. As we enter High-level Week at #UNGA79, I'm thinking a lot about the new Global Research on Antimicrobial Resistance (#GRAM) stats in The Lancet. Without urgent #ActiononAMR, antimicrobial resistance will account for 3 deaths every minute between 2025 and 2050. That's 39 million lives lost. You can read GRAM II in full here - to see the scale of the threat, but also what we can do about it: https://shorturl.at/VvTdt #AMR Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation / University of Oxford / Wellcome Trust / Department of Health and Social Care
