Today is Sweden’s National Day. Instead of having meetings, visiting events, and being busy like other Thursdays to promote research and business growth, we hope you get some well deserved rest. For those not very familiar with Swedish history, this public holiday commemorates two significant historical events: the election of Gustav Vasa as king of Sweden in 1523, seen as the foundation of modern Sweden, and the adoption of a new constitution in 1809, which laid the groundwork for modern Swedish democracy. #adaytocelebratedemocracy

Bismarck and Realpolitik The German politician and founder of United Germany in 1871 was ridiculed, and his reputation was left in tatters due to Otto von Bismarck and its association with Realpolitik. This is an ideology where political decision-making is not based on morality or political ideology. Regarding the critical tenant, to understanding realpolitik, it is vital to understand the nature of the international political environment in which you live and respond accordingly with factual information, with a decision not based on emotionalism. This view is so controversial because, throughout the Western political system, over the last 50 years, we have replaced political… https://lnkd.in/eD2YFKsv

Last week, I participated in the Europe Liberty Forum, organized annually by Atlas Network Network. As a panelist in the session “Freedom Worldwide,” I had the opportunity to speak about the ongoing situation in Georgia and the government's extensive attempts to undermine civil society in the country. Despite numerous calls and warnings, the parliament adopted a Russian-style law that designates us as agents pursuing the interests of a foreign power. This law includes high fines and provisions that grant state institutions the authority to demand all kinds of information from individuals and organizations, including sensitive personal data, professional and commercial secrets, and more. Georgia has parliamentary elections on October 26 this year. Therefore, our goal, along with maintaining the existence of our organizations, is to mobilize the maximum number of voters and clearly convey to the current regime that Georgian society will never submit to Russian influences in the country. They will face political consequences for depriving us of our European future! At the next Europe Liberty Forum in a year, we will either celebrate the success of Georgian society together, or many of us will be in exile or prison. The situation is that serious. I believe that with continued international support and by spreading optimism among Georgian voters, we can succeed and overcome the existential crisis we are currently facing. ✊🇬🇪

70 percent of Brits now want to see a much fewer market? Peak era Thatcher from '86 has coincidentally came into a sharp focus in a GCSE #economics class this week where I'm substituting. Back then I was around 16 & just about to start an O' then A' level in the subject; 2 years later landing in Manchester to study Geography & European Studies. Almost 40 years on we've been looking at mixed market economies & plucked a case study out of what Greater Manchester Mayor #andyburnham has been (successfully) doing in the fight to re-regulate & re-integrate the city-region's public transport system after what had become an embarrassment totemic of Thatcher's 1986 deregulation with, by 2018, 'more than 30 companies running services in Greater Manchester, deciding their own routes, timetables and fares. Deregulation opened local markets to all comers and the result has been confusion and poor service...' https://lnkd.in/dJ8HRE2F A hyperlink leads to debate on the veracity of whether or not the 'Great Dame' also said that "any man over 26 riding on a bus is a failure". Thatcher in retrospect does look like a mass of contradictions - her free market ideology seemed to call for efficient frictionless trade across Europe while causing individual transit chaos across metropolitan areas. Did she also snatch the school milk & sell off the school playing fields too in my generation? Today's kids in economics classes can then try & work out why there has historically been very little price-demand elasticity for 'gasoline' in the States in the context of Cold-War urban planning under the 'existential threat' of nuclear annihilation encouraged amorphous suburban sprawl with extensive public transport provision made impossible: https://lnkd.in/dRdzWvvZ ..then contrast this to Manchester where an assortment of educated students, hipsters, artists ...& the class of '92 - have rejected the 'burbs' & repopulated the inner city rejecting Thatcherite type policies. embracing instead some smart Governmental interventions.. ...including those that have called for closer links to the European market... #globalperspectives

Don’t take my word for it. This is what UK Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher, said to the European Parliament on 9 December 1986: “70 years ago Europe had just experienced, on the battlefields of Verdun and the Somme, the bloodiest fighting, the most tragic waste of a generation, that the world has ever known. “The Second World War was to bring further heartbreak and destruction. “Our Community was conceived and constructed to ensure that this experience would never be repeated, to bring about a lasting peace within Western Europe, to replace antagonism with friendship and cooperation, to deepen and broaden Europe’s democratic tradition.” Mrs Thatcher added: “And let us never forget that the aftermath of war produced two great ideas which have shaped our destiny ever since. "One was the NATO Alliance, the other the European Community.” Throughout her premiership, and previously as an MP and then leader of the Opposition, Mrs Thatcher was a strong supporter of the European Community project. In particular, she helped to design and promote the EU’s crown jewel: its Single Market, that has transformed and enriched the continent of Europe. Today, every European country is in the EU’s Single Market or wants to be (except Britain and Belarus). Recent polling by YouGov indicates that 70% of Britons support a closer relationship with the EU, including joining the Single Market, even if it means allowing free movement of people (which of course it would). You can criticise the EU bureaucracy and there will always be misconduct and incompetence among politicians. But the EU IS a great achievement that should be celebrated and honoured. 👏 You often forget what you have because it has become "normal". Or have never experienced it differently due to age. It helps to take a look at the history books... I am a big fan of the EU and believe that it can be a role model for the global community. 👍 NOW is the time to publicly stand up for it! #EuropeanUnion #EuropeanCommunity #Togetherfordemocracy

COMMON SENSE [Edited 13:30hrs 23rd April 24] Comment added in response to a call for a kind of ‘United States of Europe’ Added Text here “Many Children of the Empire have misty eyed ‘Nostalgia’ for a bygone age of decency perhaps. When Britannia ruled the waves and exploited it for every cent or rupee it could plunder. By Trade or War! Maybe not a utopia but to people of a certain age (Post War Baby Boomers) with ‘Rose tinted glasses’, good pensions and all the benefits of wealth they fear and dread what a ‘United States of Europe’ might do to them. For the rest of us, especially the younger generations (I’m a Pensioner btw) who travelled more, enjoying Mediterranean and Asian culture, good food and wine the ‘Empire’ doesn’t exist. They (We) want the freedom of movement and expression that a European Community 🇪🇺 provides And the Trade Benefits preferably witout the War part! The richer Member States contributing more and sharing their wealth for the Benefitof ALL, not just a few Machiavelli says it rather better than I can MACHIAVELLI QUOTE “It must be remembered that there is nothing more difficult to plan, nor more dangerous to manage than the creation of a new system. For the initiator has the enmity of all who profit by the preservation of the old institution and merely lukewarm defenders in those who would benefit by the new one”. Machiavelli” Added Text Ends Wanted - A NEW Leader ASAP* with #Vision #Integrity #Courage and to Lead by #Example Grahame A Volunteer 100% #Maverick *Current Leadership need not apply Great post Jon Danzig
