Most people have a very vague understanding of how their health is trending at any given moment. A couple of years ago, I was trying to wrap my head around this when I got my pre-diabetes diagnosis. I noticed that, despite all of the health apps and wearables out there, there wasn't one unifying system that brought all of your health & wellness data into one place and make it super easy to understand the direction you were heading. I ended up spending a lot of time exporting & analysing data, chatting to health professionals and piecing it together with lots of research. I also knew that by not having all of my data in one place, I was potentially missing out on valuable insights that come from connecting the dots between your diet, lifestyle and health - potentially costing me years of good health down the track. And I was right, I ended up discovering some pretty crucial trends that led me to ultimately being able to put my pre-diabetes into remission and no doubt saving me a lot of trouble later in life. It just took way too many hours than was practical for most people. Our latest app release is our way of solving this problem. We've designed and built a comprehensive evidence-informed scoring system that allows you to track and measure the key pillars of your health & wellness, including your metabolic health, nutrition, sleep, fitness and resilience - all within the Vively app. By codifying these pillars into rolled-up scores, you can start to easily visualise how each area is affecting your health, how they're related, and then track these relationships over time. Insights can be derived, actions can be taken, and health can be improved. You can bring whatever wearable you have, plug it in and start powering these scores. We also make it really easy for you to buy a CGM at any time. ❤️ Metabolic health score - get a holistic snapshot of your metabolic health, based on your glucose data 🍏 Nutrition score - understand the nutritional composition of your meals, glycemic impact and fasting window 🏃♂️ Fitness score - track a well-rounded overview of your aerobic capacity, efficiency, strength and sedentary behaviour 💤 Sleep score - detailed measures of your sleep quantity and quality 🙏 Resilience score - understand how your body is responding to stress and stressful events What are your thoughts? Is this something that you'd find useful too?

Reflecting on 2023, until April, I thought I was very healthy. My doctors thought so too. A routine blood test flagged up a risk, so I improved my diet. The goal was not to lose weight; my BMI was in the healthy range. I read a book and asked lots of questions to an app to save me time. I have never had the need/motivation to follow a “diet”. I saw no need to seek personalised nutrition advice. To sustain motivation, I had to see “evidence” (that I trusted) of benefit from “me” maintaining a disciplined approach. Generalised results in peer-reviewed journals are useful to professionals, but not always motivational for individuals. I watched my smartwatch app like a hawk, I bought smart scales so I could see charts of the daily variations over time, I continued to check my own vital signs via consumer devices. Seeing my own personal data kept me going, I paid for extra blood tests as I needed to know the sacrifices were working. I wouldn’t drive a car without looking at the speedo, how could I know I’d improved my health without measures (more than just the fit of my trousers!). I appreciate that many others might not go to this effort, they wait until something happens or the doctor says….. Prevention How can you say you’ve prevented something if you can’t prove it would have otherwise happened? There is evidence that excess “weight” (specifically “fat”) is associated with health problems. Other genetic and lifestyle factors play a role. Examples of possible benefits of weight/fat loss are: · losing 5-10% of body weight can have a significant impact on glucose control, approximately 80-90% of individuals with type 2 diabetes who are overweight may benefit from weight loss. · weight loss of 5-10% of body weight can have significant cardiovascular benefits. Around 50-70% of overweight individuals may benefit from weight loss for the prevention, management, or improvement of cardiovascular diseases. I cannot prove that my 2023 weight loss (10-15%) and fat reduction (~15%) over ~9mths have prevented anything. Surely I delayed the constraints on my freedom? My doctor did a blood test for his records. As some of the devices I used are not registered medical devices, they are not trusted by all doctors. I just hope that more people can trust tech in 2024 to achieve similar benefits. Consumer data I have improved my healthspan. Data and charts have helped me to maintain a discipline that I previously would have imagined unnecessary. This is a story about data, about being observant and trying to take control of my own health while not taking up valuable medical time or being declared “worried well”. I don’t feel different, nobody has noticed a change. Telling the story and showing friends “my evidence” (graphs) has led to some of them making their own changes. There’s a social dimension. Let’s hope 2024 sees an improvement in health-related quality of life for many people and less burden on our healthcare services.

Chief Nutrition Officer at Simple App | Palta & Consultant Dietitian Dual Niche: Health Tech || Fertility Nutrition
Today marks a big milestone for the team at the Simple App… We have just published our first peer-reviewed paper in the journal, Obesity Science & Practice! It’s of the utmost importance to us to be science-led in our mission to improve health through nutrition and also to share findings with the scientific and medical communities about our progress, sharing key findings along the way. This was our first paper looking at weight loss effectiveness of our product from January 2021 to January 2023. A big advantage of health apps is the number of people you can reach and therefore the data you have to analyse. Our results included data from over 53,000 individuals 🙌🏼 It was an honour to collaborate with John Powell, Professor of Digital Health from University of Oxford and Krista Varady, Professor of Nutrition and expert in Intermittent Fasting from the University of Chicago, Illinois. TL;DR: Simple App is an effective weight loss tool that is delivered globally at scale. The more that people use the app, the more successful they are across all timepoints. A big thanks to Dimitri Nikogosov and Rodion Salimgaraev as co-authors, Josie Porter Mariane Héroux Potter, PhD and Andrew Belaveshkin MD PhD for their support with the project, and of course to the whole Simple App team for making the paper a reality. Do blood sugar monitors help improve health? Ever thought how your daily food choices affect your body beyond the scale? Continuous Glucose Monitors (CGMs) are no longer just for diabetics—they're making waves in the wellness community too. Cindy Bekkedam, a dietitian from Ontario, Canada, recently tested a CGM out of professional curiosity. Imagine waking up to an alert that your blood sugar levels have dipped- that’s what happened to her. What started as a trial ended up revealing fascinating insights. It was her CGM notifying her of low blood sugar. She panicked and even wondered if she had diabetes. Turns out, her levels were perfectly normal. Cindy's experience highlights a growing trend. With recent FDA approvals, CGMs like Abbott's Lingo are now available over-the-counter, targeting not only diabetics but also individuals keen on optimizing their health and wellness. These devices promise insights into glucose trends that could potentially impact energy levels, mood, and even sleep. However, skepticism exists among experts regarding the benefits for non-diabetics. Dr. Ethan Weiss from UCSF notes, "While tracking glucose levels can lead to dietary adjustments, there's limited evidence that it significantly improves health outcomes." Despite debates, CGMs are gaining popularity beyond medical circles. ↳ Athletes like Dutch marathoner Abdi Nageeye are using CGMs to fine-tune performance by monitoring energy levels during training. ↳ Health influencers like Brittney Bouchard share personal success stories, citing improved energy and dietary adjustments. Yet, concerns remain. Dr. Nicola Guess points out the lack of robust data on glucose patterns in non-diabetic populations, raising questions about the utility of CGMs outside clinical settings. As we walk through this health-tech revolution, let’s keep our focus on what truly matters - holistic well-being. While CGMs offer intriguing insights, let’s not forget the basics: balanced nutrition, regular exercise, and mental well-being Are CGMs a revolutionary tool for wellness, or could they lead us down unnecessary rabbit holes? Let's discuss if you have experienced something with CGMs. What are your thoughts on wearable health tech like CGMs? Share your perspectives in the comments! #healthtech #glucosemonitors #wellness #healthmonitoring #cgms #sugar
