"In the military we don’t brag and talk about ourselves – humble professionals. In the private sector, it is imperative that you get used to highlighting all of your achievements. Employers want to know what YOU did, not what our teams had done in the past. " This week, we're featuring fellow Shane Callaghan, MBA. After the training program, Shane was hired as an Associate Territory Manager at BD 3 Ways MTV Academy helped Shane prepare for his transition: ✍️ Mentor was very helpful and actively look for job opportunities for me ✍️ Helped me reset and realize what types of roles I really wanted to targe ✍️️ Translated my experiences in a way to companies, so they could see my hiring potential What attracted Shane to his current company and role? "The culture of my new company is what drew me to it. Also, I connected with several veterans within the company before I interviewed. They also have a great veteran’s resource group. The type of role (med device sales) fit my personality the best. I tried targeting marketing and other kinds of roles, but since coming from the military wear it is a people business based off relationships as well, I felt my skillsets translated best to sales. Am I Standing in the Way of My Own Promotion? We've all been there - doubting our abilities and wondering if we're doing "enough" in our current roles. But the truth is, dwelling on self-doubt will only hold you back from future opportunities. Instead of comparing yourself to others, focus on constant self-improvement. Make a commitment to learn one new skill every month. Volunteer for additional responsibilities outside your core duties. Build strong relationships by helping teammates succeed. Promotions don't just happen - you need to show that you're hungry to grow. Have courageous conversations with your manager to understand their expectations. Don't be afraid to respectfully negotiate if an opportunity doesn't seem like a good fit. Most importantly, celebrate both small wins and times you stepped out of your comfort zone. 🏆 Self-confidence will serve you better than self-doubt ever could. Are you confidently showing your strengths each day? If not, make a change - your career is too important not to! Share your thoughts below. 💭

25 years in GovCon industry. Passionate about growing high performing teams. Building culture @devtechnology. Husband to amazing wife, father to 3 kick ass kids.
For those early/mid-career professionals looking for a promotion, my first question is always: How is this person performing in their current role? If they are not clearly and consistently exceeding expectations today, how can we expect that person to be successful in a role with more complexity and higher demands? If you're going for that promotion, be sure to kick-ass at your current role first. Every aspect of it. Especially the parts you don't love. Make it impossible for them to say no.

Hello network! I want to take just a couple of minutes of your time to say thank you again for all of the many congratulations and kind words of support when I announced my new role just over 90 days ago. Hearing from friends, colleagues, and connections new and old was an incredibly encouraging way to take on a new challenge. I've made some observations in my first few months in a new role that I'd like to share with you. I know most of my network is built from those I've met at career fairs and other recruiting events so maybe this will help you as you navigate some of your early (or in my case mid!) career decisions. 1. Changing roles feels pretty weird when you have been in one for a long time! My career trajectory from intern to director has largely been vertical outside of consuming more to the core role in which I started. That was a calculated decision for me but the more I've seen, the more I realize I had no clue what all was going on outside of my bubble. If I could go back and start again, I would definitely more seriously consider moving horizontally in the earlier years. 2. Promotion doesn’t always mean more! Of course there was more compensation, but in my case, I actually moved to a team in development which for me meant I lost my direct report and went from an office back to a cube. I’ve adjusted and it’s really helped me assimilate into the team faster but was a bit of a shot to the ego initially… not a bad reminder that we are all still a work in progress. 3. Learning can come in many forms! I was considered an expert for our business in my last role, but over here, I’m learning along with everyone else as we continue advance into new technology and the world of AI. Moving roles reinvigorated my desire for learning and I’ve been fortunate to attend many sessions listening to the worlds most intelligent people navigating this quickly changing landscape…not something I would have taken advantage of in my last seat! I’ll leave you with this quote from John Maxwell and ask that if you have a story to share or would like to connect, please reach out! “Change is inevitable. Growth is optional.”

It's a harsh truth but... Just doing your job will not get you promoted. Doing more of the same means you are good at your current job, it doesn't say you are ready for the next level. A promotion is not a reward for doing your job well. A promotion is a vote of confidence that you can do next level work. That you can drive a bigger impact and make the company more successful. If you *only* do what you were hired to do, you’ll stay where you are. If you can start operating at the next level BEFORE you get the title? You'll demonstrate you are ready for a promotion. 💪 #promotion

Only one person can get that internal #promotion #opportunity! It does NOT mean you suck if you didn't get it. It does not mean you will never get #promoted. It does not mean your boss hates you. This round, for this position, for this set of candidates, the hiring team did not feel you were the best choice. That is ok! It doesn't mean you're performing poorly. It doesn't mean you have to quit your job and look for #careerdevelopment or #advancement elsewhere. Seek feedback. Look for #growth opportunities in your current position. Identify skills you want to gain for your next step. And wake up again tomorrow.

Millions of people get hired and promoted every day. And millions of people don't necessarily feel ready for the position. If that is you, hear me, YOU'RE NOT ALONE! It's not easy being new at a job or even promoted to the next level. There are expectations that come with the position and many times we sit in our insecurities of whether we are ready for it or not. But take it from me ... you absolutely are! The first step is just SHOWING UP! Show up on time. Show up with a good attitude. Show up hungry to learn. Show up humble. Show up a team player. Just show up! and then... TRUST! Trust that you are being given the job for a reason. Trust that the person that gave you this position sees something in you. Trust that you are capable of learning it. Trust that you are at the right place at the right time, Just Trust! and finally... STEP INTO IT! You never gain anything without trying. Step into it with a smile and step into it, even if you have to fake it till you make it! 😉 #keynotespeaker #confidence

It's been awhile since my last post but I have been attempting add value or have more engaging / interesting posts Let's talk about something that has been bothering me lately and I just need to get it off my chest. It's about people who complain about not getting promotions, raises, or recognition but don't seem to be doing anything to stand out and show their value. I get it - we all want to progress in our careers and be acknowledged for our hard work. But here's the thing: simply wanting it isn't enough. We have to put in the effort and prove why we deserve it. I have a friend who's been moaning about not getting a promotion, but honestly, they haven't been going above and beyond to make it happen. It frustrates me to see them complaining without taking any action to stand out from the crowd. I believe that if we truly want to move forward in our careers, we should be willing to do the extra mile. It's not just about asking for what we want; it's about showing our worth and delivering exceptional results. If you're feeling stuck and longing for recognition, let's take a step back and evaluate your own actions (this is the hardest part). Are you really going above and beyond? Are you demonstrating your unique skills and making a difference? Instead of just complaining, challenge yourself to take on more significant projects, collaborate, and continuously learn and improve. Show your employer / leaders why you are indispensable and deserving of that promotion, position or raise! Dreams don't come true by themselves; we have to make them happen! Let's support each other in stepping up our game, embracing new opportunities, and proving our value. #CareerGrowth #HardWorkPaysOff #ShowYourValue #MakeItHappen
