📬 News from our partner association Zakher in Gaza, November 2024 A MedWF partner since 2011, Zakher is located in the Gaza Strip and we recently supported them, thanks to you, so that they can continue their actions to protect women and girls in Palestine. Here's what they wrote to us: “What we have done in recent months: 1- Psychological unloading sessions have been organized for women inside the shelters to better cope with this situation. 2 - Food and drinks were distributed to 100 displaced families in the shelters, to improve their health and their children's nutrition. 3- Drinking water was supplied and distributed inside the shelters, helping to maintain the general health of displaced people and prevent illnesses. The needs to be addressed in the coming period are as follows: During our fieldwork, it became clear that many displaced families in the Deir Al Balah camps, particularly widow-headed families, suffer from very difficult living conditions. These difficulties are exacerbated during the winter season, when tents are damaged as people move from one place to another to escape death and seek safety. In addition, the lack of food and drink, due to soaring prices and the scarcity of humanitarian aid, has encouraged the spread of numerous illnesses for children, such as malnutrition, and poverty. The MedWF grant aimed to improve the living conditions of 30 widowed women heads of household in the displaced persons camps in the town of Deir Al Balah, with five or more members. The focus has been on providing adequate shelter through the distribution of insulated tarpaulins that can be converted into winter tents, as well as food parcels for 50 families. We would also like to provide psychological support for children, include cultural activities and offer various training courses for displaced women.” The Mediterranean Women's Fund wants to thank you for the support you have given to women's associations in Gaza. ❤️🩹 https://lnkd.in/dqgQHVK2

EAST JERUSALEM/AMMAN/NEW YORK, 8 January 2025 – At least 74 children have reportedly been killed in relentless violence in the Gaza Strip in just the first seven days of 2025. Children have reportedly been killed in several mass casualty events, including nighttime attacks in Gaza City, Khan Younis, and Al Mawasi, a unilaterally designated 'safe zone' in the south. The most recent attack, yesterday, saw five children reportedly killed in Al Mawasi. “For the children of Gaza, the new year has brought more death and suffering from attacks, deprivation, and increasing exposure to the cold,” said UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell. ”A ceasefire is long overdue. Too many children have been killed or lost loved ones in a tragic start to the new year.” The continued lack of basic shelter – combined with winter temperatures pose serious threats to children. With more than a million children living in makeshift tents, and with many families displaced over the past 15 months, children face extreme risks. Since December 26, eight infants and newborns have reportedly died from hypothermia – a major threat to young children who are unable to regulate their body temperature. The humanitarian situation in Gaza has spiralled out of control. The number of trucks with aid entering Gaza remains woefully insufficient to meet the most basic needs of families. Civil order has largely collapsed inside Gaza, with the looting of humanitarian goods. The few remaining operational hospitals are overwhelmed. The destruction of civilian infrastructure has left families struggling to access essential supplies, including food, safe water, sanitation, and access to healthcare. Kamal Adwan Hospital, which had been the only operational medical facility and the sole hospital in northern Gaza with a pediatric unit, is no longer functional following a raid late last month. This has further exacerbated the already dire conditions for medical care in the region. “UNICEF has long warned that inadequate shelter, lack of access to nutrition and healthcare, the dire sanitary situation, and now the winter weather put the lives of all children in Gaza at risk. Newborns and children with medical conditions are especially vulnerable,” said Russell. “The parties to the conflict and the international community must act urgently to end the violence, alleviate suffering, and ensure that all hostages, especially the two remaining children, are released. Families need an end to this unimaginable suffering and heartbreak.” UNICEF appeals to all parties to the conflict to adhere to their obligations under international humanitarian law, including by ceasing attacks on civilians, humanitarian workers, and civilian infrastructure; meeting civilians’ essential needs; and by facilitating rapid, safe, and unimpeded humanitarian access. UNICEF also renews our call for an immediate improvement of the security environment, including security for aid delivery trucks.

I am struggling to believe that over 9 months on, 284 days later, there is no ceasefire in Gaza; there is still barely any aid, food, water, or healthcare. An entire population of 2 million (40% of which are children) are being traumatised. But with all the other world events, it's falling off the news cycle. So here are some headlines: * 186,000 deaths, according to a conservative estimate in the Lancet: at least 8% of the population. * the "largest cohort of child amputees in history" (MSF trauma doctor, via New Yorker) * famine across the entire Gaza strip (OHCHR) * Only 13/36 hospitals are partially functional. (OCHA) Women giving birth without anaesthetic in tents; amputations without anaesthetic; contagious disease rampant due to lack of sanitation. * Shelters of 10,000 people surviving on just 500ml water per person per day (IRC/MAP); For comparison, the minimum standard is 15 litres; UK daily average is 142 litres. * Over half of buildings damaged or destroyed: it could take 40 years to rebuild. (UNEP/UNDP) * Repeated bombings of displaced people in 'safe zones'. Over 70,000 tons of bombs were dropped between October-April, double that of Dresden, Hamburg and London combined during WWII (Euro Med Human Rights Monitor). Land and water is contaminated with hazardous substances from the explosives. * 44 years of development - healthcare, education, wealth - wiped out. (UNDP) What you can do: 1. Stay informed. Follow media coverage for example with Al Jazeera, Haaretz (sign up for their Daily Brief email), and social media accounts like @wizard_bisan1 on Instagram. 2. Help suspend arms sales. International humanitarian law - the 'law of war' - must be upheld. Support the work of Global Legal Action Network (GLAN) who are taking the UK government to court for their failure to halt weapons exports. Write to your MP; sign petitions like this one. https://lnkd.in/esN83TCB. 3. Donate if you can. UNICEF, UNRWA, MAP (Medical Aid for Palestinians), MSF are all good options. Choose Love currently has a matched-funding campaign: https://lnkd.in/eT4hBtaX 4. Attend a March or Rally. Follow Palestine Solidarity Campaign for the latest events in the UK. I've now been on several - there are children, people in their 80s and 90s, Jewish groups and holocaust survivors, students, trade union people, climate activists, parents and families. Despite the bad press, it's friendly, humanity is on full display and I've met many wonderful people there.

Suicide is a global crisis, claiming the lives of nearly 800,000 people annually, with countless more attempting it. The situation in refugee camps like Kakuma and Kalobeyei is even more alarming. Here, the pressures of food and water shortages, lack of education, unemployment, and the heavy burdens on young mothers and households drive many to the brink of despair. The youth, facing a future filled with uncertainty, are particularly vulnerable. At Rehori Community-Based Organization, we are deeply committed to addressing this crisis. We believe that empowering local organizations is key to fighting against suicide in refugee camps. Our work focuses on providing support to families, advocating for better resources, and creating opportunities for youth to find purpose and hope. But we can't do this alone. We urgently call on donors, partners, and the international community to prioritize direct funding to local actors like us. By investing in grassroots organizations, you enable us to provide the vital services and support that can save lives. Together, we can build a stronger, more resilient community where everyone has the opportunity to thrive, despite the challenges they face. Your support is not just a donation; it’s a lifeline. Let’s stand together in this fight against suicide. Empower the local organizations that know the community best, and help us bring hope to those who need it most. The war in Sudan has now lasted for 20 months, bringing great suffering and displacement to many Sudanese people. Recently, we conducted a assessment in eastern and northern Sudan, and the results show serious damage from the war. The impact is felt not only by those who have been displaced but also by the families who have opened their homes to them. Over 89% displaced people and 75% host families are struggling to meet their basic needs. Many are eating only one meal a day, or two if they are lucky. In the past six months, 92% of the host families have received no help at all. With rising prices, even those with jobs cannot afford basic necessities. Conditions are tough. I recently met Fatima and her family of 25 people! Hosted by one of the good ones. They live inside a tent in his house and rely on their sister to live! A young girl with 25 people! she often come back empty-handed and they sleep hungry! 75% of displaced children and 61% of local children are not in school. The health system is failing many, with 65 % of the displaced families, and 41 % of their host struggling to afford medical attention. Like Mastora fled from ALJazira who has a daughter suffers from anemia. Before her daughter fell ill, Mastora worked hard to support her family. However, after her daughter’s diagnosis, she spent all her savings and income on treatment. Despite her efforts, she still cannot afford the necessary medicines. Now, her daughter remains unwell, and Mastora is left without work. And this is just In northern and eastern Sudan, where the war hasn't destroyed everything and it's possible to reach people. so what about those in Darfur and Kordofan. Many there can't get help, and the sound of death can be heard everywhere. The ongoing war has caused immense suffering. We need everyone’s help! So far, only half of the funds required for Sudan have been raised, making it hard for humanitarian organizations to assist those in need. The world’s inaction feels like a signal for more suffering to continue. We must take action now by increase the funding and ensuring humanitarian assistance is reaching those in needs. It has now been 610 days of war in Sudan. Let us all #KeepEyesOnSudan! The world must understand the immense suffering of the Sudanese people. We need to raise awareness and support those in need. https://lnkd.in/eaSax_kZ

By mid-July, over 1.1 million people in #Gaza, nearly half the population, are on the brink of #death due to #starvation, states the United Nations’ Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO). This starvation is #forced- deliberately caused by the western-backed, #Israeli government's onslaught on the #Palestinian people and prevention of humanitarian aid. This starvation is not an effect of nature. It is by design. It is intentional. It is genocidal. One in three children under 2 years of age is affected.*** As of March 2024, evidence indicates a major acceleration in starvation-related deaths and malnutrition, with rates doubling since January 2024 in the northern governorates. Continue to speak up, continue to sign petitions, continue to donate. See resources here: https://lnkd.in/eyReKHJT

Northwest Syria is experiencing a significant decline in humanitarian support, forcing many organizations to scale back their responses, deepening the humanitarian crisis. Camps suffer from severe shortages of food, water, and healthcare services, increasing the risk of disease. Funding cuts have led to staff reductions, making it harder to meet rising humanitarian needs. Over 2 million displaced people live in harsh conditions in 1,904 camps, with children, women, and people with disabilities facing daily challenges. Thousands of camps lack food, water, healthcare, adequate shelter, and education, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in the region. #HumanitarianCrisis #Syria #HumanitarianSupport #DisplacementCamps #FundingShortage #HumanitarianNeeds #NorthwestSyria
