[Hong Kong Celebrates Return: Scientific Research Strengthened]  Hong Kong’s scientific research has flourished in the 27 years since its return to our Motherland. With support from the national and local governments, the city has built a robust research infrastructure, attracting international institutions and yielding remarkable results. ASTRI, Hong Kong’s largest applied technology R&D centre, has been at the forefront of this progress. Since 2000, we have obtained over 1,100 technology patents and transferred more than 1,500 technologies to industry through R&D contracts and technology licensing, driving innovation across various sectors. As we move forward, ASTRI remains committed to deepening collaboration among government, industry, academia and research institutes, promoting adoption of technological achievements and injecting sustained momentum into Hong Kong’s innovation and technology development. Meanwhile, we will actively participate in international exhibitions and overseas visits, strengthening cooperation with the Mainland, ASEAN and Europe, creating more opportunities for Hong Kong-developed research projects and expanding into broader markets. 💡 What is the spatiotemporal evolution of global innovation networks’ (GIN) structure and which factors affect it?   A new study by Feng Hu, Liping Qiu, Shaobin Wei, Haiyan Zhou, Isaac Akpemah Bathuure, Hao Hu from Zhejiang Gongshang University, North Minzu University, Ningbo University, East China Normal University and Shanghai University employs an OECD dataset comprising of co-invention patents from 60 countries (regions) from 1999 to 2020.   Key takeaways: ✔ GINs are increasingly connected, yet the COVID-19 pandemic weakened the network structure ✔ Important nodes of networks are mainly developed countries in Europe and the United States ✔ Economic factors and scientific and technological information factors have strongest correlations with innovation networks, while demographic factors the weakest ✔ China’s innovative connections with other countries (regions) have gradually increased and diversified, and the ability to use structural holes has gradually improved.   Policy implications: 💡 Countries (regions) should deepen their innovation connections with core countries of innovation networks and expand their innovation connections with neighboring countries (regions) 💡 The similarity of cultures and languages simplify the difficulty of patent cooperation, while technological proximity could solve challenges caused by national systems and language barriers to patent cooperation 💡 For China specifically, creating a global innovation platform, increasing investment in scientific research and science, and making use if its current position of global innovation and the advantages of structural holes, is recommended 💡 China should fully exploit the advantages of its role as a ‘transit station’ to further seek and explore new innovation connection targets, so as to enhance its global voice in innovation.   Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/dvd4h23Q   #innovation #networks #china #rndmanagement #openaccess

China's economic powerhouse province vows to develop new quality productive forces East China's economic powerhouse Jiangsu Province pledged more efforts to develop new quality productive forces this year, with the goals of building new national labs and fostering more tech firms. Xu Kunlin, governor of Jiangsu, told a press conference on Tuesday that more efforts will be made to boost basic research, industrial upgrades, and business innovation. Xu said the province has allocated a total of 2.48 billion yuan (about 350 million U.S. dollars) for this year's basic research, including improving labs and advancing major research programs.
