In 2023, there were 1752 youth in custody in NM with only 1007 foster homes. We have kids living in office buildings. Youth are moving from shelter to shelter every 90 days. We have youth choosing to run away because that feels like the best option. How can we change education outcomes and break the foster care cycle when we are not able to figure out a place for the youth to live? #fostercare #fosteryouth #fosteryoutheducation #education https://lnkd.in/eYnjYxuK

In Honor of National Foster Care Month, we would like to spotlight our Extended Foster Care Unit: Extended foster care under AB12 provides an array of resources for non-minor dependents or extended foster care youth between the ages of 18 and 21 who would otherwise age out of services without any further assistance. Probation officers who supervise these youth provide more than just case management and supervision. The goal of AB 12 is to ensure youth leave foster care with the practical skills to achieve their potential and succeed in life. The initiative focuses on providing a safety net of financial assistance, services and ongoing support to these young adults as they age out of foster care. #engagingyouth #BuildingSupport #strengtheningopportunities #fosteryouth #SupportingPositiveChange

We often share ways how you can get involved if you aren't a foster parent, but as National Foster Care Awareness Month comes to an end, we want to share this reality: Our country is desperate for more foster parents. You can get down to the nitty-gritty, giving details and specifics for every county in the state and every state in the country, but this truth remains the same: How many children are experiencing foster care? Too many. How many open foster homes are there? Not enough. The stories aren't fiction-- children are sleeping in DCFS offices because state workers can't find an open bed. Kids are being placed into group homes rather than being invited into family settings. Siblings are being separated. It's true that not everyone can be a foster parent... But it's also true that many people can. #fosterthefamily #fosterthefamilyus #thisisfostercare #fostercare #NFCM #fostercareawareness #fosterparent #fosterfamily #everyonecandosomething

The foster care system can be difficult to navigate for both the children and foster parents involved. Many children raised within the system face internal struggles as they try to find stability, love and acceptance. If you were a foster child who had to move from home to home, it can be hard to feel secure. You may struggle with feelings of abandonment, low self-esteem and trust issues. The system needs improvement to better support these vulnerable youth. Let's raise awareness of the challenges foster youth endure. #fostercare #fosteryouth #fostercarematters

Let's talk foster care realities: there's a widespread misconception that it's an easy path to adoption, but the truth is far more nuanced. Foster care is primarily about providing temporary care and support to children while their families work through challenges with the ultimate goal of reunification. Adoption may happen in some cases, but it's not the primary objective. 🏡 It's essential to understand that foster care is a complex system designed to prioritize the best interests of the child, aiming to keep them connected with their biological families whenever safe and feasible. So, let's dispel the myths and recognize the importance of supporting families and children in their journey toward stability and reunification. 💕 #FosterCareAwareness #SupportFamilies
