#Thanksgiving moment: Read to appreciate our unique medical researchers like David Fajgenbaum, MD, MBA, MSc who focuses on rare diseases (after finding a cure for his own). As a medical student, former college quarterback Dr. David Fajgenbaum was at the peak of health when he acquired a mysterious disease that, in mere weeks, led to multiple organ system failures. On the brink of death 8 times and in intensive care units repeatedly -- he received last rites as doctors were baffled about the cause. Eventually, the mystery dissolved: #Castleman #Disease, a rare condition defying categorization. So he began researching and testing treatments on himself before discovering his own cure. The co-founder of the #CastlemanDisease Collaborative Network, Dr. Fajgenbaum leads discovery efforts on rare disease therapies and has authored a memoir, #ChasingMyCure. See more below. #davidfajgenbaum, MD, MBA, MSC

Expanding the Reach of Precision Medicine with Multiomics A recent global initiative, highlighted in Nature Medicine, emphasizes the critical need to address the diverse factors contributing to diabetes heterogeneity. While multiomics holds the key to personalized treatments, the data we rely on is overwhelmingly from lower-risk European populations. To truly realize the potential of precision medicine, we must expand multiomics research to include more diverse cohorts that reflect the global population. This approach will ensure that precision healthcare is effective and equitable for everyone, everywhere. #SilkLongevity #ForEveryone #ForEverywhere #PrecisionMedicine #Multiomics #GlobalHealth #DiversityInResearch https://lnkd.in/eYzP-_Er

🎉 Celebrating a Decade of Discovery at The Research Institute 🎉 With our 10th birthday approaching soon, we’re thrilled to spotlight the remarkable achievements of our researchers within the Kidney research pillar at St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton! Here are some recent pillar highlights: • Targeting GRP78 Signalling: A Novel Approach for Preventing Kidney Fibrosis – a study led by Dr. Joan Krepinsky and her lab, this study revealed a game-changing insight: inhibiting GRP78 signalling could be a novel strategy to prevent fibrosis in diabetic kidney disease. • Risk of Kidney Failure in Patients with CHIP - Dr. Matthew Lanktree’s team discovered that individuals with pre-existing kidney disease as well as clonal hematopoiesis of indeterminate potential (CHIP) face an elevated risk of progressing to kidney failure and an increased need for dialysis. CHIP occurs in about 15 percent of people over the age of 65. Research on CHIP is growing as scientists have begun to understand the effects of this condition on our health. These are just glimpses of the vast research landscape within our Kidney pillar. Our passionate scientists remain committed to advancing knowledge and making a positive impact on cardio-renal health. Stay tuned for more exciting updates as we celebrate a decade of innovation! #WeAreStJoes #ChallengeStatusQuo #DedicatedToDiscovery #ResearchInstituteAnniversary St. Joseph's Healthcare Foundation
