Had such a blast chatting with Meghan Grace, Ed.D. on the #GenZ podcast!
During the episode, we discussed what it means to be authentic at work, the impact of gender expectations, and the critical role of self-connection in organizational leadership.
This conversation had me reflecting on a question I often ask during my workshops...
“When was the first time you learned about gender?”
A few years ago, I had a participant who had something big come up as he examined this question.
He was a cisgender straight man, and he told me that when he was young he loved to make flower arrangements and bake. His mother had a beautiful garden he would slip flowers from and reflected fondly on getting to do this as an activity together.
When he reached high school, however, something changed. His peers made fun of him for these activities. They called him some… not so nice names... leading him to question his masculinity, his gender and sexuality, and ultimately leading him to stop doing these things that he so genuinely enjoyed.
As he recounted this experience to me, he realized how gender expectations and expectations of masculinity led him to disconnect from key aspects of himself.
This is a common experience for folks of all gender identities. While many focus on how gender expectations impact trans and gender expansive folks, the reality is that these expectations impact everyone and can lead to us being severed from parts of ourselves that are critical to our authentic joy.
We know that disconnection, whether from ourselves or others, can have a huge impact on how we show up in the world and how we show up at work.
So how do we reconnect with ourselves when this severing has occurred?
Take a listen to the latest episode of the #GenZ podcast where we dive into this exact question. This episode is available on all streaming platforms.
Once you take a listen, be sure to let me know what resonated with you and what it makes you consider around your own experiences of authenticity and self-connection.

In the latest episode of the Social Fabrics Podcast, @troy_malange and @_rayneo dive into an essential conversation about dating and relationships. They highlight a common pitfall many of us encounter in our pursuit of love: the rush to jump into deep commitments too quickly.
Their key message? Take care of your heart first. It's all too easy to dive headfirst into relationships, especially in the LGBTQ+ community, leading to high expectations early on. Within weeks, we may find ourselves jumping from casual dating to discussions about marriage. But the truth is, nurturing your own happiness is vital.
Instead of seeking fulfillment from others, give yourself the chance to be alone and focus on self-love. When you make happiness a priority for yourself, any partner who enters your life will complement it rather than complete it. Think of added love as the cherry on top of an already delicious sundae!
Now, I’d love to hear from you: What are your thoughts on taking time for self-care before entering a relationship?

Thank you to Hays for the invite to be a part of its new video series, Leading with Pride, which is suitably timed as we approach the Manchester Pride festivities this weekend.
The podcast below touches on some key topics including my personal career story, the difficult challenges I have encountered and the various highlights I have experienced throughout my legal career to date.
Adele Callaghan - thank you again for being the most wonderful host and for making me feel at ease immediately upon meeting you and of course, to Gary Sheldrake and Tessa Hollingworth for the meetings beforehand to discuss what the video series would entail.
As the various individuals at Hays involved in this video series have demonstrated, it does not take a lot for an organisation to demonstrate its genuine efforts towards raising awareness in this space but initiatives like these will have more of an impact on your people (existing and future), your culture and your organisation's performance than you may ever fully comprehend.
My ask to you (yes, you) if you are reading this: please block out 20 minutes in your diary at some point this week and set aside the time to listen to this video (even on your commute to or from work).
My advice to those who want to show true allyship towards minority communities as a whole: ask the right questions, self-educate and most of all, be proactive / genuine in your approach.

Coming out at work can be hard for members of the LGBTQ population.
But, some people have very positive experiences doing so.
What makes the difference for LGBTQ employees coming out and feeling good about it, versus having a less positive experience? And how can you be a part of creating a more supportive environment for coming out?
