Here are three things to refrain from doing: -Referring to them as an addict: Avoid labeling your loved one as an addict, as it can reduce their identity solely to their addiction, potentially leading to feelings of degradation and increasing the risk of relapse. -Bringing up their past: Reminding your loved one of their past suffering might seem like a way to motivate them for sobriety, but it can hinder their progress. It's important to help them stay focused on the present and future, rather than dwelling on the past. -Acting as if the substance use disorder never happened: While it's natural to want to move past the pain of the addiction, it's crucial not to ignore its impact. Acknowledge that certain aspects of their life and your relationship may have changed after recovery, without treating them as fragile. Some of the signs of relapse include: -Associating with people and places associated with prior use -Suspicious changes in mood or behavior -Glamorizing the past and prior substance use -Not going to meetings or engaging in sober social events -Openly criticizing or rejecting the recovery process If your loved one seems to be falling back into old habits or you suspect a relapse has or is actively happening, seek professional help promptly.
