Record Hurricane Season in Atlantic Could Spell Trouble for Supply Chains The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) predicts a record-setting hurricane season for the Atlantic region in 2024. This year's hurricane season, which typically spans from June 1 to November 30 and peaks in late August and September, could directly coincide with the peak shipping season from August to October. This is a critical period when retailers experience a surge in demand from holiday shoppers ahead of Thanksgiving and Christmas. Previous hurricane seasons have demonstrated the potential havoc they can wreak on supply chains. For instance, in 2017, Hurricane Harvey's impact was felt for weeks as it caused a week-long closure of multiple Gulf Coast ports, including the Port of Houston. Silt from the hurricane's floodwaters partially blocked entrances to three major terminals in Houston, leading to congestion for freight carriers and a shortage of drivers due to flooded roadways. More recently, 2021's Hurricane Ida severely impacted petrochemical production in Texas, resulting in a shortage of resins and plastics such as PVC, which are used in various products including toys, plastic packaging, and bottles. It's estimated that the hurricane took over 60% of U.S. PVC production offline. Logistic specialists highlight a range of potential issues from hurricanes, including production shutdowns, increased costs from rerouting shipments, disruptions to suppliers in affected areas, and damage to transportation infrastructure such as roads, ports, and airports.
