My First Rotation Manager "Everyone is a stakeholder." Okay... WHAT THE HECK DOES THAT MEAN? 🤔😅 When I joined UBS as a trainee in 2019, my first role was to orchestrate an internal conference designed for thousands of colleagues in APAC. As someone who organised numerous events in university: Large-scale international food festivals The TEDxHKU conference (twice) Toastmasters competitions Christmas parties Tram parties (the venue is 'moving'!) I was so ready to flex my organizational skills 💪😁 Oh boy was I wrong... I was introduced to the then-theoretical concept of "stakeholder management." 🧑💻 Then began my journey of learning from ground zero... Months-long cycles of inviting external speakers Content alignment with various departments Project management on spreadsheets Internal approvals Consent forms Taking minutes It was so hard for me to produce meeting minutes that everyone understood 😅 I could always understand my own logic and abbreviations but my STUBBORN versions were rejected until it was 100% clear. Honestly, I HATED but also NEEDED this process 🤬 Fortunately, my first rotation manager offered near-daily check-ins to transition my work style from a fresh undergraduate "blank slate" to one of a proper corporate project manager. (Besides MANY other managers I shall introduce another time.) 🕰️ Four years have passed, and since quitting my job to pursue WeDerm Health full-time, once again I am learning my ropes in the social service industry in Hong Kong. "If I am going to be an accountant or auditor, I'll be the biggest liability" 💀 This was what started me out on a decade-long career pivot across 20 cities. Here's the de-factor "path of success" for accounting undergraduates: → Get a good internship with a Big 4 accounting firm → Excel and get a job offer, ideally, before graduation → Work at a Big 4 towards becoming a Partner or head out to commercial practice (lastly - retire rich and happy, well, hopefully) The problem? I knew I was going to be a poor fit and terribly unhappy and incompetent at the job. When my college mates at Singapore Management University were excelling in balancing cashflow statements, I struggled badly to even make cents. 😅 Instead, I knew I loved learning and teaching. And even cooler - to be paid to travel around the world to do so! (pipe dream, huh) So I set up a consult session with my career office. And I asked: "I am an accounting student. But I want to become a speaker and coach, how should I do so?" It was 2011. So you can imagine alternative careers weren't that celebrated. The officer told me to get a proper job first (in gist). 😪 Thankfully, I had my Dean as one of my biggest supporters then - Prof Gary Pan. So I built my "side hustle" and emergency funds judiciously. Growing a speaking and coaching business full-time at 26 years old with 0 corporate experience, wasn't easy and accessible. Countless rejections. Zero revenue months. Looking at my CPF statements and feeling so poor. But it was with good people like Prof Gary who opened doors for me and many other clients and sponsors. A decade later with a team of 7 staff across Philippines and Singapore, I am thankful to have: 🎯 Spoken to over 36,000 leaders across 20+ cities globally and presented on the main platform at MDRT Global Conference 2023 - the event for the top 12% in the financial industry 🎯 Taught communications, personal branding and growth strategies to corporate and government leaders and CXOs from 3 countries (Singapore, Japan and Saudi Arabia) and seeing the world (sometimes) in J class 🎯 Accorded as the youngest Certified Speaking Professional (CSP) in Asia (2020) and transacted over $3M in services revenue while helping our clients be #topofmind (lastly - living my "rich life" with a 3-year old toddler tagging along too 👶🏻) If there's one big lesson I've shared with professionals wanting to forge their own path: If you'll never write your own life story, someone else will. And you may not like acting in that. And if Shakespeare was any right: "All the world's a stage... And all the men and women merely Players" So why don't you find a stage that most deserves you... and play to win instead of, not losing? In the news: Singapore's flourishing family office scene pulls in fresh grads A new work-study elective, which matches SMU students with family offices for internships, has attracted considerable attention, reflecting the increasing appeal of wealth management as a career path for recent graduates. A surge in single family offices in Singapore has caught the attention of not just industry insiders, but also students like Justin L., who are interested in a career in wealth management. Singapore has solidified its position as a wealth management hub and demand for family offices is on the rise. ‘That’s what sparked the interest for many of us within my batch,’ said SMU student Justin, referring to the mushrooming single family offices in the city-state. He said amid the broader finance world, there is a growing emphasis on wealth management and feels there are plenty of opportunities to explore in this space. This curiosity led Justin, along with SMU student Si Min Swee and eight others, to participate in a work-study elective offered by SMU, providing a four-month internship opportunity with family offices and family advisory firms. BDO Singapore, along with firms like Kamet Capital Partners, IAM Asia Capital, and Lombard Odier, partnered with SMU for this elective. 🌟 From Struggles to Success: Lessons in Young Leadership 🌟 Ten years ago, I started my journey in Kuala Lumpur as a debt collector with a basic salary of RM1,600 and no degree. My early years were marked by financial struggle, but they laid the foundation for my growth. After gaining experience in debt collection, I transitioned into real estate with a starting salary of RM2,+++. It wasn’t an easy path, but persistence and a desire to grow kept me moving forward. A major turning point came when a generous mentor, offered me a fully sponsored opportunity to pursue my degree. Despite my initial doubts, I completed my degree with distinction over 4.5 years, thanks to this incredible support. Building a family and career simultaneously, I’m blessed with two wonderful children. Despite my commitment to my company, a new opportunity arose, and I took on a managerial role at age of 27 in a different field. This role provided me with invaluable experience and set me on a path back to my dream in building management. Though my tenure with my dream company was cut short due to unbearable issues, it was a crucial learning experience. Today, I’ve found my place in a role that feels right—surrounded by a great team, effective leadership, and fantastic clients. Just attended the coolest internal Career Day at PhillipCapital! This was my first experience with a company actively encouraging rotation, and I found it incredibly interesting. It shows a real commitment to employee growth and development. Not only did we get a sneak peek into how some of the departments work, but a rotation expert shared how it helps you see the big picture. Everyone, from the supporting functions like operations and IT to the client-facing roles like marketing and sales, contributes to the company's success! Makes you appreciate the teamwork, right?
