Nearly 70 years ago, the landmark decision of Brown v. Board of Education set a new course for education in America, declaring state laws establishing separate public schools for black and white students to be unconstitutional. This was not just a victory for those brave students and families who fought for their rights, but a beacon of hope for generations to come. Yet, the journey toward realizing the full promise of Brown v. Board continues. Across the nation, disparities in resources, opportunities, and inclusive environments in schools remind us that the fight for educational equity is ongoing. As we commemorate the 70th anniversary of this pivotal moment, we are called upon to renew our commitment to advocacy, action, and dialogue. It's a call to ensure that the principles of equity, inclusion, and diversity are not just ideals, but realities in every classroom. 🌟 Join us in honoring the legacy of Brown v. “Being that I was still a new mom at that time, from what I knew, based off of where you live, that’s where you send your child,” she said. “Even if you want to send your child to the best schools, you don’t really have the option.” - Ta’jee Presswood Chicago’s school choice debate is a tangled web, and Black families are right in the thick of it. Some opt for selective enrollment schools and charters, seeking better resources and opportunities. Others cling to their neighborhood schools, fearing displacement and a fractured community. Is it about finding the “best” school, or the “best fit”? Is it about individual success, or collective upliftment? Can we even separate the two? There are no easy answers, just a tangled web of history, opportunity, and responsibility. And Black parents, once again, are left navigating it alone, their children’s futures hanging in the balance. So, let’s stop asking “which school is right?” and start asking “what makes a school right for all our children?” Let’s invest in neighborhood schools, not just selective ones. Let’s create diverse learning environments where every child feels seen, heard, and valued. This is why we must elect a new Board for the children of St. Louis. While parents are standing up and taking matters into their own hands, working a full day only to sit in a 3 hour training to learn about the science of reading and how to improve literacy, the PAID leaders are standing outside on street corners complaining that kids and families are leaving the district by the thousands. They are complaining about the mass exodus of parents trying to escape the very education they are responsible for improving. Rather than discuss what they can do to improve education, they are blaming charter schools for daring to open their doors as charters try to grant families a reprieve from a failing school district. Only 13%… 13% of Black children in SLPS can read on grade level. Rather than holding district leaders accountable and asking about the plans to improve, news outlets like the Post Dispatch provide voice and cover for an ineffective board. Most charter schools struggle just as much to educate our children. But the difference we see is that charters are spending their time trying to improve rather than pointing fingers and playing a blame game. We don’t care if there are 100 high schools in this city if they all suck. Give me 101 if that one carries the hope of a quality education. We believe in @believeschoolsstl We believe in parents and @blackmenreadstl We believe in teachers trying to do their best. We believe in the greatness of our children. We do not believe that the SLPS board has the love for or the dedication to Black children needed to provide families with the education they deserve #WeCantWait, resign now or be voted out in 2025

Attention California parents! Did you know that up to $1,500 is available to low income, foster, and/or homeless kids in grades K-12 attending public schools in the state? That's right! This money can be used towards college savings and is waiting for up to 3.6 million eligible kids. However, only 350,000 parents have claimed their kids' accounts so far. Don't let this opportunity slip away! For many families in marginalized communities, this sum of money is a fortune, and it could be the jump start that kids need to become happier and wealthier adults. Studies show that college graduates make an average of $1,000,000 more over their lifetime than those with only a high school diploma. Moreover, owning a college fund with at least $500 makes a child 3x more likely to attend college and 4x less likely to drop out. So, if you know anyone who is from a low-income household with grade school kids, please encourage them to sign up at www.calkids.org. Remember, sometimes all a kid needs is a little lift.

Crazy idea of the day– what if we created an admissions process based on “grit”? If you haven’t read the book, “Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance” by Angela Duckworth, I could not recommend it enough. Dr. Duckworth defines grit as ‘the ability to sustain and work toward long-term goals, despite setbacks, and self-control as the regulation of one’s behavior through concentration and effort. These—more than intelligence, quality of instruction, family life, or income—determine a child’s educational achievement.’ The study actually followed a few of my West Point classmates. Researchers said “Cadets who displayed that special quality of “passion and perseverance for long-term goals of personal significance” were more successful during basic training and the four-year military academy that followed. To quote Scott Galloway “State-sponsored education is who I am, and how I got here.” There is no doubt in my mind that I was a product of Affirmative Action. Being a kid who grew up in Harlem in the 80s, the product of a single-mother household, on WIC–these "setbacks" shaped me to be the man that I am today. Army Ranger School was easy compared to growing up in Section-8 housing. So my question is, how can we build an admissions process that looks at a broader set of factors that are strong predictors of success and create a healthier society reflective of the values that built this great country–hard work, grit, and equal access to opportunity? If anyone knows Admissions Officers who are looking at impactful ways to expand their talent pool, I’d love to see how Equity Quotient, with our vast access to socioeconomic data, can help invest in future leaders of tomorrow :)

For 30 years, Children's Defense Fund has held the Ella Baker Child Policy Training Institute to prepare hundreds of college-aged young people to teach CDF Freedom Schools® curriculum at our program sites across America. This year's national training welcomes more than 1,500 youth advocates. On Thursday, CDF Vice President and Chief Program Officer Sheri Brady joined with Denise Dean, executive vice president of East Tennessee Freedom Schools, to appear on WATE-TV's Living East Tennessee with Veronica Ogbe and Amber Lynn Carroll. Brady and Dean discussed a public demonstration Children’s Defense Fund has planned to protect the freedom to read in Tennessee and across the country. "Reading is fundamental and it's really important to actually engage students and a lot of time if students don't see themselves in the stories they read, they won't read,” Brady said. “So, it's really important they have books they can relate to and understand." The event, which will also feature a march through downtown Knoxville, is also meant to bring attention to the proliferation of book bans across the country. Such methods of censorship have proven harmful to young people. "I talk to families in two ways about books,” Dean said. “So, our books are mirrors that reflect us, our cultures, the stories that are familiar to us, but they're also windows; windows into other cultures, other lifestyles and other people. So, whereas the mirrors are affirming for the children, the windows allow them to have greater understanding and empathy that allow them to deal with people who are different than them in a healthy way." https://lnkd.in/ePDt-N9q
