We are in the middle fo a huge leap in technology and not enough skilled automotive technicians to meet the demand. This is no longer a grunt trade as it was looked at 30-40 years ago. Today’s technician is a highly skilled individual that wants to challenge themselves with technology of today. I look at how the trade has evolved from the time that I started. There was nothing compared to what we have today in terms of working conditions, incentives, signing bonuses, tool allowance, training, state of the art facilities, equipment, benefits etc. Is it perfect? Not by any stretch, but there has never been a better time to explore this option for many men and women as they contemplate their futures. If you’re the parent of a young mind, don’t discourage them from entering a skilled trade based on stigma and profiling (which I see all too often). They will be just as skilled as a doctor, lawyer etc. and in demand. There is no telling where their future will lead. I have the privilege of working with a team of some of the sharpest diagnostic minds in the industry providing technical support to a network of dealership technicians at a corporate level. All come from an automotive technician background and decided to advance their careers from there. They handle difficult to diagnose advanced electronics and powertrains, hydrid vehicles, battery electric vehicles, fuel cells, ADAS systems and connected technologies to name a few. Always training and updating themselves to meet the ever changing landscape, all because they chose this career path!
