💫Exciting Launch Announcement💫 Only 5% of Africa's trained AI talent can afford to access GPUs, the essential instrument for building competitive AI solutions. So no matter how many people we train or how much data we gather, we continue to hit the compute roadblock for true innovation to take place. As Keyzom Ngodup Massally said, history was made in 1945 when the United Nations Charter was drafted in San Francisco to give birth to the United Nations. So it was pretty historic that yesterday, in San Francisco, the UNDP and the Italian G7 presidency launched its Africa AI Hub for Sustainable Development. Celina Lee and I worked with the UNDP team to publish this primer on Africa AI Compute, explaining the key investment that can rid Africa off its compute roadblock and push the continent to the next stage of its AI revolution. Africa is estimated to need $2.5B in investments by 2030 to plug its "compute gap". Together with our budding coalition, we proposed a $15m program to initiate this flywheel and bring Africa closer to becoming the "use case capital of AI for the world". 👉🏾 Read more https://lnkd.in/gvYssmiH Great working with you Tonee Ndungu, Robin A. Miller Omar Jagne, Sharon Machira, Houda Ghozzi, PhD Alliance4ai, Ahura AI and others contributing to this cause.

Dr. Uzair Javaid, Ph.D. Co-founder and CEO Betterdata recently participated in the panel discussion on "The digital Dilemma: Striking Balance in the use of GenAI". The discussion revolved around the applications of GenAI for the future of the workforce and how individuals, businesses and governments can use GenAI ethically and responsibly. #GenAI #artificialintelligence
In partnership with the Embassy of France in Singapore, The French Alumni Singapore co-hosted the conference "The Digital Dilemma: Striking balance in the use of Generative AI" at Alliance Française de Singapour on the evening of 20th May 2024 as part of the #Voilah! Festival. Our Honorary Treasurer, Mr. Sze Chin (SQ) Lee, was both speaker and moderator for this event, which saw more than 100 attendees! Sze Chin oriented the audience with an overview of #GenerativeAI, highlighting its capabilities and limitations. He also shared how the #opensource movement, including notable French open-source contributions from companies like Huggingface and Mistral, is driving innovation in the GenAI space. A spirited roundtable discussion followed, thanks to our amazing panelists: Dr. Uzair Javaid, Ph.D. (Co-founder of Betterdata), Mr. Isaac Heng Wai Tan (Co-founder and CTO of SUPA), Ms. Felicia S. (President of non-profit SGbono and Partner Lead of Women in AI Asia Pacific (APAC) Singapore Chapter), and Prof. Farah Benamara (co-lead of the #NaturalLanguageProcessing research group at IPAL: Franco-Singaporean Joint Research Laboratory). Our expert panelists offered their diverse insights on topics such as the impact of GenAI on the workforce, the ethical and responsible use of AI, the role of government, and the importance of diversity and inclusion of those unable to bridge the digital divide. Our greatest thanks to the panelists, the organizing team at the Embassy, as well as the audience for an evening of sharing and learning!

Multistakeholder Consultative Sessions on the Development of a Continental Strategy on Artificial Intelligence (AI) Happy to attend and be part of the stakeholders providing input on the "Continental AI Strategy" of the African Union, focusing on the opportunities and risks AI brings for #Social, #Economic and #Cultural #Development in Africa. To achieve this, it is important to create the foundations and capabilities for harnessing the potential of AI all across the "African continent, including an intra-Africa coordination mechanism, and actively engage in international cooperation on AI Governance (namely the negotiations on the #GlobalDigitalCompact). The sessions will gather input on identifying key strategic elements, broaden the understanding of various stakeholders' AI needs, and deepen awareness of the risks of AI use and development in Africa, helping to draft the #AUAIStrategy. Great to hear from Gabriela Ramos (UNESCO), Jerry John Kponyo (@KNUST Engeering Education Project), Sade Dada (Meta), Amr Safwat (Government of Egypt) and others distinguished guest speakers. + info 👉👉👉 on https://lnkd.in/dCf5C-23 - - / / - - 📣 Background The 44th Ordinary Session of the African Union Executive Council endorsed the Conceptual framework and tasked the AU Commission with expediting the development of a comprehensive, forward-looking, and action-oriented continental AI strategy to effectively harness AI's potential to transform the continent in line with the AU Agenda 2063 goals while managing associated risks and harms. The Continental AI Strategy for Africa will set out how the potential benefits of AI for African social and economic development can be harnessed and the legal and regulatory safeguards needed to protect users and societies at large. Building on the AU AI Conceptual Framework, the Strategy will place emphasis on building the capabilities of AU Member States in AI skills, research and development, data availability, infrastructure, governance and private sector-led innovation, as well as ensuring regional and international cooperation and coordination on this fast-moving and disruptive technology. #GlobalCooperation #DigitalGovernance #AI #ArtificialIntelligence
