Full circle moment in motion - from taking on a robust volunteer department of 700+ helping hands newly in my non-profit career to advancing onto my own certification in Volunteer Administration over the course of a decade, it all comes back to helping those in the field make the day-to-day work an ease for every party involved. It takes a village; we need to make those opportunities available and accessible! Cue Small Sign Up - as the volunteer sign-up options just didn't fit the mold, I partnered up with none other than my own partner in life to create and customize an online sign-up platform. The heart of this project came down to making volunteer opportunities not only visible and streamlined for all viewers, but add the level of customization that big name sign-up sites haven't been able to offer without major lifting by the individuals behind the projects (let's be honest, volunteer managers already wear enough hats!). If your organization has been left yearning for more out of your sign-up options, consider Small Sign Up. The States for Service Coalition, the policy arm of America's Service Commissions, invites organizations to sign on to a letter asking Congress to appropriate $30 million for the Volunteer Generation Fund (VGF) in FY25 by COB on June 14. VGF is the only federal-level funding for volunteer engagement. It has tremendous opportunity to expand to support volunteer infrastructure throughout the country. The goals of Volunteer Generation Fund as described in the Serve America Act are to assist states, nonprofit, faith-based, and other civic organizations by expanding and improving the capacity of such entities to utilize volunteers for critical services. It was also intended to spur innovation and efficiencies in volunteer recruitment and management practices, with the goal of increasing the number of volunteers, and enable the people of the U.S. to effect change in our communities by participating in active volunteer and citizen service. Since its creation, regular appropriations for VGF have not exceeded the FY23 and FY24 appropriations of $8.5 million despite being authorized up to $100 million in FY14. Montana will likely join a growing number of states that require nonprofit hospitals to provide additional information and heighten transparency on their community benefit and financial assistance activities. While the specifics are still being worked out, if this legislation passes, Montana will require nonprofit hospitals to provide an annual report on its charitable acts with the expectation of more and broader oversight to follow. For now, it does not seem like this will have much of an impact on Montana's nonprofit hospitals outside of an increased administrative burden. As with all things nonprofit hospitals these days, it is an opportune time to look at current community benefit activities and financial assistance policies, ensure all are captured on your Form 990, Schedules H, and see where your system can continue to expand these services.
