Customers are noticing some small businesses are now charging a processing fee to use a credit or debit card. Lottie Watts, Senior Manager of Media Relations for the National Retail Federation wrote to News 3, “The issue of excessive credit card “swipe fees” is a top concern for retailers and consumers.” “I would suspect for small businesses, we’re going to see more and more of those passing fees onto customers,” said Bob McNab Professor of Economics for Old Dominion University. “As credit cards increase the charges levied on small and large businesses to process transactions, it’s normal to see businesses try to shift those costs to consumers. We already see that in Europe and in Asia where it is commonplace.” Read More: https://lnkd.in/g9GgRCyV Credit: Angela Bohon WTKR News 3 Moneda® is on a mission to inspire community, your spirit and create economic opportunities for all. New Study: Durbin-Marshall Credit Card Bill a Win for Nation’s Top 5 Retailers, Loss for America’s Small Businesses A recently released report by the University of Miami Herbert Business School, found any savings derived from the proposed government mandates in the Durbin-Marshall Credit Card Bill would disproportionately benefit the top five businesses in the US, “putting small retailers at a further competitive disadvantage.” The study also found virtually no savings would be seen by retailers with less than $500 million in sales and true small businesses would see a negative $1 billion impact. I'm getting tired of credit card companies. Have you seen ads recently telling you that Congress is going to take away your credit card benefits? Have you seen ads telling you Congress is going to make using credit cards more difficult? These are lies. Nearly 80% of the credit card industry is dominated by Visa and Mastercard. They're pouring millions into an ad campaign to convince legislators and voters that the Credit Card Competition Act of 2023 will harm consumers through the elimination of card benefits. Why? In reality, the CCCA increases competition in the credit card market. Visa and Mastercard have a near-duopoly, and in recent years have substantially increased their fees for using credit cards. This has only led to more profit in the pockets of their executives. Have you noticed small businesses posting credit card usage fees? Noticed a restaurant charging you for using a credit card? That's because these small businesses have been, until now, absorbing the cost of credit card transactions, but now those fees are too large, and they're forced to ask us to pay them. This deliberate price gouging by the dangerous Visa-Mastercard duopoly is highly lucrative for them, so they're running a wide ad campaign - and it has ensnared major news organizations, like CBS: https://lnkd.in/ebpDtfFe Let's be real: the CCCA would force more competition in the market and thus drive down the cost of swipe fees. Visa and Mastercard claim those fees pay for card benefits, but this is just a scare tactic they're using to manipulate you. I encourage you to call your federal legislators and ask them to pass the CCCA of 2023 because credit card companies aren't taking away your benefits - they're just scared of losing a bit of profit. The New York Times published an opinion video regarding credit card swipe fees and the Credit Card Competition Act (CCCA). The editorial supported the CCCA and encouraged its audience to support the legislation. In the video, the Times explains how swipe fees often become operators’ biggest costs, causing them to raise prices for everyone to offset the expense. The video used a fictional store, MJ’s, to demonstrate how swipe fees work in stores. The video stated that “in 2020, the Federal Reserve found that the average American at every income level loses more to swipe fee price hikes than they earn in rewards.” “On average, [the poorest Americans] pay five times more in price mark-ups than they’ll ever receive in rewards,” the Times added. Since the pandemic, the fees are up 50%. Swipe fees, across all brands of credit cards plus debit cards, increased over $22 billion to over $160 billion last year. Some credit card companies have agreed to lower fees charged to the businesses, but for some credit care users, they worry that the the points and rewards they've accrued may go away because of it. While the agreement won't go into effect until late 2024 at the earliest, it's a reminder to consumers that rewards, points, and loyalty benefits - If you have points, spend them. “They’re not a trophy to dust and admire.” https://hubs.li/Q02rxGlp0 #FinancialPlanning #PersonalFinance #Visa #Mastercard #FinancialLiteracy

Title: Unlocking the Power of Department Store Credit Cards for Your Business As a Credit Specialist, I'm here to share insights on how you can leverage department store credit cards to build your business, even if you have less-than-ideal credit. One of the best options to consider is the Home Depot department store card. The Home Depot card is issued through Citi Bank, and it can be particularly beneficial for individuals in the trades, such as handymen, painters, or those starting a power washing or landscaping business. With this card, you can purchase all your supplies and materials from Home Depot, allowing you to streamline your business operations. However, the real power of the Home Depot card lies in its ability to facilitate your e-commerce ventures. You can use the card to purchase Visa gift cards, which can then be used to fund your online business endeavors, such as reselling on platforms like eBay or Amazon. Just be mindful to make a legitimate purchase at Home Depot before purchasing the Visa gift cards, as attempting to buy only the gift cards can result in your card being frozen or shut down. Overall, the Home Depot department store card can be a game-changer for those looking to start or expand their businesses, even with less-than-perfect credit. It's a versatile tool that can support both your brick-and-mortar and online ventures. #BusinessCredit #DepartmentStoreCards #HomeDepotCard YouTube Source: https://lnkd.in/gYTgcMcQ YouTube Channel: https://lnkd.in/g2p2ARHx Related Content: https://lnkd.in/g2uHW8ti

The largest credit card companies in the U.S. have reached an agreement with merchants to reduce the so-called swipe fees retailers pay for accepting credit card payments, potentially saving the retailers $30 billion. These fees also help fund the credit card rewards programs that many travelers redeem for things like free flights and hotel stays, leading points hawks to wonder: Are loyalty programs at risk? Here’s what we know so far about the changes.

This article shares aresearched breakdown of the fees and front end profits that come with using credit cards. The article offers a very simple way of looking at what fees are associated with a credit card transaction, how CC rewards are funded and positioned to keep consumers reward sensitive and the why merchants need to accept these fees but have to pass these fees through to consumers. Wang states in his research “Thanks to this combination of consumers being rewards-sensitive and merchants being fee-insensitive, networks have a strong incentive to hike up merchant and interchange fees to fund generous rewards programs. Merchants, then, carry the most direct burden—but Wang argues that burden is getting passed on to consumers, one way or another.” Reform is needed. Thank you to the leaders, retailers, suppliers and members of NACS, and all those that support all fair policy, to protect consumers. Continue to advocate for change. #nacspac #advocacy #convenience
