“We are so rich in high-income countries, and yet, people take it for granted very often, and that’s why I come back year after year. This is why I choose to do medicine and dentistry. This is why I choose to serve other people.” Dr. Leo Cheng has volunteered with us over 20 times since 2006, bringing his vast knowledge and skills to areas with limited medica care! Between his work with patients and his dedication to training local medical professionals, his heart reflects hope and healing every day he's on board! Thank you Dr. Cheng for your hard work and dedication to changing the world around you. Want to share your skills, experiences, and values to make a lasting difference in the lives of others? #FindYourPlaceOnBoard just like Dr. Cheng: https://lnkd.in/gaEnp9cD #MercyShips #HospitalShip #GiveBack #VolunteerSpotlight

The older I get, more and more of my friends are hitting the dental lecture circuit. It’s very cool to see people that you started out with, that are now filling up huge rooms and teaching people from all over the world. I could never imagine doing this. I have a huge fear of public speaking. I think many people do. When I ask my friends what’s the scariest part of giving a massive presentation, all of them give me the same answer. The fear that keeps them up at night is: Will they be able to fill the lecture hall with people? I guess that having the ability to fill a room is a great advantage. If you can do that each and every time, people will ask you back over and over again. There is a huge upfront cost that comes to hosting a lecture and some people never recover their costs because they were not able to fill the lecture. We all have things that freak us out. Dentistry has an array of things that we are afraid of. Some people hate the injection. Others can’t stand the sound of the drill and a whole bunch of other stuff that causes people to avoid going to the dentist. At Dente, we recognized this fear, and it is why we began offering Anxiety Free Dentistry. Patients are given anxiety reducing medication to help them have a relaxing appointment. Many of these patients will say that their Anxiety Free dental appointment was the best dental appointment they’ve ever had. If you or anyone you know are afraid of going to the dentist and would like to experience an Anxiety Free dental appointment, please have them visit us at mydente.com or call 773-292-1911 to schedule their appointment. There are 155 accredited MD-granting and 37 accredited DO-granting schools in the United States, totaling 192 Medical Schools. We have a dangerous and growing #doctor shortage in the United States. There are 756 billionaires living in the United States. 10% of them have $10 billion or more, and 16 have more than $50 billion. If every #billionaire did what Dr. Ruth Gottesman did, the problem would be solved in less than a decade, the medical profession would be open to far more students from a wider variety of backgrounds, and we could build more, larger and more diverse teaching hospitals. Did you know that right now, the U.S. can only produce 133 new urologists every year? That's it. There are only 133 residency slots available, so regardless of how many doctors want to go into this field, how quickly our population is aging, how large we are growing, how desperate the need for this and so many specialties, we are limited to the number of available spots in existing programs. That's one new urologist for every 2.5 MILLION people. This is true for every specialty you can think of - in most cases, there are fewer residency positions available than there are specialists retiring from these jobs. According to Tara O'Neill Hayes, costs of #chronicillness, which include longer and more frequent hospital visits, greater prescription drug use, lost education and job opportunities, and lost economic productivity, reach $3.7 trillion each year in the United States, approximately 19.6% of our gross domestic product. Think how much we save when we have more, better trained, and more accessible doctors!! These are where our priorities as a nation need to be refocused. Let's support future healers, and not saddle them with onerous debt, and while we're at it, re-examine healthcare as a for-profit industry in the first place. It wasn't primarily that until 1970s, so we can still unring that bell! When shareholders & Wall Street are taken out of the equation, doctors are paid more, patients pay less, and everyone wins! (except the investment bankers, and we should all be okay with that...) All it would cost to make #medicalschool free is $191 billion. As a country, we spend more on less every day. And the first billion was already covered. Thanks, Ruth!

**🦷 Reflecting on the Importance of Early Dental Care 🦷** I recently had the privilege of being part of a dedicated team that organized a dental screening camp at S.B. Patil Public School, a massive institution with over 5,000 students from grades 1 to 12. Over the course of two days, I personally screened around 350-450 students. What I discovered was both surprising and concerning: 90% of these children had never visited a dentist before. It also gave me a newfound respect for pediatric dentists! This revelation was particularly shocking given that these children came from well-to-do and educated households. The neglect in some cases was appalling (One child showed up to school nonchalantly with a massive swelling), highlighting a significant gap in our approach to oral health. This experience reinforced a critical message – we need to establish a better structure to promote oral health from a very young age. Without early intervention and education, generation after generation will continue to take dental health for granted, leading to preventable issues later in life. Here are a few steps we can take to improve this situation: 1. **Raise Awareness**: Parents and guardians need to understand the importance of early dental visits and regular checkups. 2. **Incorporate Dental Health into School Curricula**: Schools can play a pivotal role by incorporating oral health education into their programs. 3. **Community Initiatives**: Organizing more dental camps and community outreach programs can help spread awareness and provide essential services to those in need. 4. **Policy Advocacy**: Support policies that promote preventive dental care and make it accessible to all children regardless of background. #OralHealth #HealthAwareness #CommunityHealth ---

Scoliosis, affecting 3 million children annually in the U.S., often requires bracing or surgery for severe cases. Now, orthopedic surgeons, Judson Karlen, MD, and David Bennett, MD, are the first in Arizona to offer Tether™ Vertebral Body Tethering System, allowing more flexibility and children to return to normal activities. Read more here: https://bit.ly/3DLvwes #scoliosiswareness #scoliosis #pediatricsurgery #spinesurgery #spinesurgeon The Tether is approved as a Humanitarian Device for patients with idiopathic scoliosis with a Cobb angle of 30-65 degrees. Patients should have failed bracing and/or be intolerant to brace wear. There is probable benefit of the device, but its efficacy is still unproven. Post operative risks include overcorrection of the instrumented curve, cord breakage and bone screw migration. Full contraindication and risk information can be found at myscoliosis.com
