In their new Forefront article, Kate Froeb, Erika Martin, Betty Bekemeier, Tekisha Dwan Everette, Georges Benjamin, and Lisa Simpson from University of Washington, Public Health Accreditation Board, American Public Health Association, Trust for America's Health and AcademyHealth discuss how public health services and systems research generates the evidence to address deficiencies in public health systems and identify transformations needed to establish a more equitable infrastructure. "Not unlike public health itself, PHSSR is sorely underfunded. As pandemic emergency funding is largely rescinded or spent, the nation will likely return to the boom-and-bust pattern of funding increases during public health emergencies followed by a return to chronic underfunding. Breaking this cycle requires, in part, generating scientific evidence to improve our system’s performance, catalyze transformation, and build the business case for sufficient and stable public health funding." The Maryland Rural Health Association was proud to present at the last Maryland Commission on Public Health. Maryland’s Commission on Public Health is tasked with assessing the foundational public health capabilities of state and local health departments in Maryland and analyzing the state’s ability to respond to major public health challenges. The Commission will make recommendations for reform in several areas, including the organization of public health departments; information technology, information exchange, and data analytics; workforce; procurement; funding; and communication and public engagement. Executive Director, Jonathan Dayton, says, "It's essential that the commission, in the data collection phase, take into account the counties and jurisdictions that are rural.
