🚨 Community Safety Update 🚨 In light of recent violence at block parties, Detroit is taking action to keep our neighborhoods safe. Mayor Mike Duggan and Chief James White are rolling out a multi-layered strategy: 1️⃣ Neighborhood Response Team: Starting this weekend, DPD will deploy a dedicated team in each precinct to monitor and address illegal block parties, supported by 80 officers for swift action. 2️⃣ Priority 1 Response: All 911 calls about illegal block parties will be treated as top priority. If you see unpermitted gatherings or illegal activities, call 911 immediately. 3️⃣ Prosecution of Hosts: The city will prosecute homeowners and hosts of illegal block parties. Violations can lead to 90 days in jail and a $500 fine. Hosts will receive a warning before enforcement actions are taken. 4️⃣ Permit Process Engagement: Making sure residents are well informed on the process to host a legal block party and obtain a permit from the City of Detroit. Gather signatures from 75% of your neighbors, and ensure your event ends by 10 PM. Stay informed and help us maintain a safe community! Engaging communities in crime reduction can be highly effective. One approach is through community policing, which fosters a collaborative relationship between law enforcement and community members. For example, as someone involved in preventing extremism and crime, you could organise or participate in community meetings to discuss local issues, share information security management practices, and develop joint strategies. This approach not only helps in crime reduction but also strengthens community bonds.

A good step towards some proactive policing in our area. However, there is a long way to go. Having regular, visible patrols would go a long way toward deterring the high levels of criminal and anti-social behaviour in the region. As would investigating crimes such as shoplifting, vandalism and burglary rather than just issuing crime reference numbers. https://vist.ly/xjya

United We Stand: The Importance of Community: One of the most powerful lessons from September 11, 2001, is the importance of community. In the face of tragedy, we saw an extraordinary outpouring of solidarity, resilience, and support from people across the country. Law enforcement, first responders, and everyday citizens came together to rebuild, care for one another, and strengthen the bonds that keep our communities safe. This sense of unity remains at the heart of modern policing. Building trust between law enforcement and the public is essential for creating safe, thriving communities. Community policing, which emphasizes collaboration, open communication, and shared responsibility, is key to preventing crime and fostering a sense of security for all. As Criminal Justice professionals, it’s our duty to continue nurturing these connections because when we work together, we are stronger. Let’s honor the spirit of 9/11 by continuing to build trust, protect one another, and foster connected, resilient communities. #UnitedWeStand #CommunityPolicing #MoraineValleyCRJ #NeverForget

Former Scottish police officer Graham Goulden, now a police trainer, believes that recent examples of street violence highlight the need for action rather than words, and points to the success of the Scottish Violence Reduction Unit’s long-term violence prevention approach – using a combination of enforcement, collaboration and community involvement – as an effective strategy moving forwards. ❝While politicians, police commentators and activists’ debate what’s needed, young people – specifically young men – are dying and will continue to die on our streets. What is needed is not words, but action.❞ ❝We shared good practice and tried new approaches learned from other parts of the world. We made use of technology to assist our efforts. We brought officers and the public with us on our journey. We engaged the media. We weren’t soft, we were smart.❞ ❝When we see police officers not using their powers of search this can impact negatively on community action which is also needed to address violence. When we see communities getting involved, we will help reduce levels of violence.❞ ❝Long-term prevention requires a multitude of different approaches. Some may come across as soft but as I say there is nothing soft about violence prevention. When you get it right it’s more about being smart not soft.❞ https://lnkd.in/e83eaR4k #lawenforcement #policing #police #violence #violencereduction
Violence prevention is smart, not soft – both stop and search and community involvement are crucial
