This one is a bit personal
Shock, confusion, "you can do better than this" look, ይሄን ሁላ ተምረህ ተምረህ?
And the common one, ስራ ቀይረሃል ወይስ ኣሁንም እያስተማርክ ነው?
These are the attitudes and the questions that I get when friends and relatives ask and say when they meet me after a while.
When I tell them I teach in an International school ትንሽ መለስ ይላሉ
From four years of teaching among the many things I understand one is, most people look down and disrespect teachers and the teaching profession.
” those who can’t do, teach” የሚለው ኣባባል በደንብ ከሚተገበርባቸው ሃገራት ኣንዱዋ ኢትዮጲያ ነች
And I understand where that sentiment comes from, In a country that any unemployed graduate take teaching as an option when they left without an option and most of them become unqualified teachers the disrespect and patronizing is understandable.
And ትንሽ የማይባሉ መምህራን have wayyyyyyyy below average academic and pedagogical ability and shouldn’t become a teacher in the first place.
I personally know someone who is completely unqualified to become a teacher, yet has become one.
Some relative of mine has become a 2nd-grade English teacher at a private school. She graduated in Theatrical Arts with many C’s, does not have her degree because she failed her exit exam, and has a poor command of the English language.
And there are a lot of “Teachers” who are like this relative of mine. This is a “feature” in the current Education system, not a “bug”.
However, regard less of these realities; disrespecting the teacher and the profession don’t make things better. It rather makes the few qualified teachers to flock away from the profession and.ልጆቻችሁን የማስተማር ፍላጎቱም ፥ ብቃቱም ፥ ኣቅሙም በሌላቸው ሰዎች ላይ መጣል ይሆናል።
Thus, as a parent, when you enroll your child at a certain school, try to assess the qualifications of the teachers in that school and observe how the school treats your child’s teachers.
If you do that, it will make things better both for your child and for the teachers. That is how you make a positive contribution to the betterment of your child’s education and education in general.
