The 2024 Summer Olympic Games in Paris officially get underway (competition actually started on Wednesday) today with the most ambitious Opening Ceremonies ever conducted. What most people won’t be thinking about (and brands interested in marketing around the Olympics need to be) is that today not only marks the start of the Summer Olympics, but it also comes just 561 days before the start of the 2026 Winter Games in Italy. The short turnaround between Summer and Winter Olympics is a stark contrast to the 902 days that passed between the opening of the 2022 Winter Games in Beijing and the start of the 2024 Summer Games in Paris. That means brands who want to join in on the Olympic movement have 341 fewer days to sign deals, build strategies and execute. As someone who has closely followed and cherished international sports events, I'm thrilled to see #Karlsruhe, Germany, is set to host the The World Games in 2029—becoming the first city ever to organize this major event twice. Congratulations to the team that worked on the bid! This isn't just a win for Karlsruhe; it's a great opportunity for Germany to showcase our capability to host sustainable and impactful events that draw local and global audiences. Hosting around 3,000 athletes from more than 100 countries in about 35 sports, the event promises to be more than just a competition; it's a celebration of global unity and athletic excellence. With a budget planned to cap at €100 million, it plays in a simiar league as the European Championships Munich 2022, Special Olympics World Games Berlin 2023 and the Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU World University Games. The comments from the Deutscher Olympischer Sportbund (DOSB) and the major of Karlsruhe suggest that the stage is set for a festival that invigorates the entire community—underscoring Germany's commitment to sustainable sports development. The 2024 Olympics are over. Races, meets, competitions now complete. Results final (well, maybe…). What happened in Paris has now come to an end and in true Hollywood style, the flag has been passed to LA as we anticipate 2028. Today there are athletes mourning losses. Today there are some debating what the future holds. There are still others basking in the joy and glory of their accomplishments. So much time and energy spent preparing for these Olympics and now it’s done. Some wish it had gone differently. Some have yet to realize what happens next. I often wonder what the next four years holds for many of them… I’m so quick to jump to the next thing. Always looking ahead, I often miss the opportunity to reflect and celebrate. Too quick to move on to what’s next, I become critical of what I could have done differently rather than enjoy the moment. There is a time to reflect. There is a time to mourn. There is a time to celebrate. There is a time to rejoice. There is a time to anticipate what’s next. There is also a much-needed time to rest and recover. There is a time to plan for what happens next. There is also a time to live in the moment. The Olympics and these athletes have taught me so much. There’s a lot to reflect on today as we think about the close of these last few weeks and what lies ahead.
