Metal AM #SponsoredContent: The LASERTEC 30 SLM 3rd Generation sets new standards in additive manufacturing in the powder bed as DMG MORI applied 100% machine tool design for this new machine platform. It features a quad laser system, fully overlapping scanfields and a build volume of 325 x 325 x 400 mm. Constant part quality is ensured by a new machine accuracy package using a highly rigid and thermosymmetric cast iron frame. Active temperature compensation supports positioning in the Z-axis, while the implemented gantry concept reduces motion errors to a minimum. The LASERTEC 30 SLM 3rd Generation gains additional efficiency thanks to the quick-change build container. Proven components like the rePLUG powder module for fully automated powder handling under inert gas atmosphere ensure highest work safety as well as maximum flexibility in case of a material change. The operator is supported with innovative features like the new protective glass monitoring and guided workflows in the digital ecosystem CELOS X. Find out more: https://bit.ly/3S10vKW

It’s all fine and dandy but if 2 powder particles of average 30 microns get sintered onto either side of the part, the part is out by roughly 60 microns. It’s even worse if we take the max particle size of 45 microns for new powder and it’s even worse if you take the max particle size of the particles you sieve out being 63 microns (depending on industry). Lets face it, you can design around it all you want but science is science and the technology is what it is. The only way to get accurate LPBF is to remove the powder or make it so small (and hellishly expensive) that you just make the particles that can stick to the side much smaller.
