Next up for the DOS Won't Hunt podcast: "Who Owns Me? -- Data Monetization, Data Privacy, and Data Ownership" Word of the data breaches attributed to ShinyHunters stirred up a conversation within our editorial team about ownership and control of personal data. This is not a new matter, but the increasing frequency of data breaches at massive scale has forced new considerations to be weighed by enterprises and the public. I am looking for guests for this Friday's recording of the podcast to discuss the forces at play in who holds and controls personal data, what individual recourse might be adopted by members of the public to exert control over data, what that means for monetization, and how cybercriminals continue to reshape this conversation. As always, the podcast recording will be Friday -- June 7. Please email me directly at joao-pierre.ruth@informationweek.com

Our instincts tell us that, to really do meaningful analytics and experimentation, we need user-level data (because, sure, we can always "roll things up" from a granular point; we can't "drill down" from natively aggregated counts!). That's deeply, deeply ingrained in the minds of analysts and marketers, which I think is a root reason for handwringing over privacy regulations and a tendency to constantly look for ways to work around those regulations to be compliant with them while also minimizing the data loss. This podcast episode where Debra Farber JD, CISSP, FIP interviews Matt Gershoff does an excellent job of blowing up that mindset. Collecting as much data as possible is really an *optionality* play (or, a "just in case" play; as opposed to a "just in time" or a "just enough" play). If the problem formulation up front is clear (which is an oft-ignored best practice, anyway), then data collected at some level of aggregation can often be just as good as user-level data, and it has the benefit of: 1) being much more privacy-aware, and 2) simplifying the analysis.
