A thought provoking and well written article on building trust within a team, I especially like the sailing analogy! Reminds of when I worked in Fremantle WA during a previous World Cup! Talking of challenges Richard, I'd like you to develop your thoughts on the need for trust along another dimension. I'd argue that trust or, more accurately, lack of trust, is at the root of governmental and institutional reluctance to support and invest in the agricultural carbon and biodiversity markets. Am I wrong? While acknowledging there's always a degree of flux in all biological eco-systems the quality, veracity and repeatability of the measurements and calculations we use to support carbon and biodiversity credits is currently falling short of what the market requires by an order of magnitude. The evidence for this lies in the comparison of the value of a tonne of sequestered BECCS/DACCS carbon vs a tonne of sequestered soil carbon. Farmers don't trust the carbon calculator tools used to measure their carbon footprint. Take 3 of the main tools in the UK (Farm Carbon Toolkit, Cool Farm Alliance, Agricalc) enter the same input data; the outcomes can vary by a factor of 3! Once you have to explain the justifiable reasons for the differences, you've lost most farmers. At least some of the tools in the UK are taking action to "harmonise"(https://lnkd.in/eiqyNiyA) these calculators, but there's so much fudge in their explanations chances are you'll give up or die of boredom before you get to the end. Farmers don't trust soil carbon measurement. There are too many inconsistencies in core sampling depths and the number and spacing of the soil horizons being measured. This is compounded by the fact that there are differences in the lab techniques used to measure soil carbon (LOI/Dumas). The farming practices used to help sequester carbon distribute the carbon differently throughout the soil profile. The aim is to get it at least some of the carbon further down the profile as it's slightly more stable than carbon near the surface. Agricarbon (I don't work for them or receive any payment from them) are making real strides in providing really excellent baseline soil carbon measurements, but there is a real reluctance for farmers to meet the cost of this as the return on investment is opaque. Government and industry need to develop and apply more rigorous standards on both calculator tools and measurement protocols if investors are to believe the measurements that we're using to sell them carbon. Farmers, as it currently stands are the big losers! Those that truly are sequestering carbon are being paid only a tiny fraction of the value of the carbon being paid in other markets. I'd argue that for wide spread adoption and engagement by the farming community it's crucial that these issues are addressed.
Lessons learnt on Trust while Down Under - The British challenge for the 37th America’s Cup isn’t going well. New Zealand, the holders, are now 3-0 up on a first to 7 basis. The AC75 boats used are an awesome product of innovation and technology, but what fascinates me more is the level teamwork and specifically trust that racing an AC75 competitively requires. Due to the massive sails, Ben Ainslie and his rival skipper, Peter Burling, only have a 180-degree field of view. At any one time they can only see half the course and must rely completely on their respective co-helms. They must trust their co-helm to do the job as well, or better, than themselves. That trust is built through hundreds of hours of practice in the simulator and on the water. Map of Ag operates in the UK, Europe, NZ and Aus, across time zones 10-12 hours apart. There is no overlap in any part of a conventional working day between the hemispheres. At any one time, I only have a 180-degree view of our market, and the product required to meet its needs - I can only clearly see half of the boat, and half of the course. As such, I have to completely trust my co-helm for this race, our CTO and NZ MD, Andrew Cooke to navigate the southern hemisphere tacks and make the strategy calls as and when he sees fit to ensure we are competitive. Next Tuesday, I’m back in Aus at the Australian Farm Institute Canberra RoundTable https://lnkd.in/ebbf4n-d . I, and a whole group of distinctly better qualified industry experts, will be discussing “Putting Policy Into Action”. Effective action requires management and, arguably, only what gets measured, gets effectively managed. If we, as industry, government or NGO, are going to support the management of a sustainable economic and environmental future for farming, we will need to measure, and to do so at scale. Scaled measurement requires data sharing by farmers and data sharing requires a level of trust. Andrew and I have built our trust through many conversations; many meetings over a long period of time where we have developed a mutual understanding through dialogue. To skip to my RoundTable punch line: You can’t, with a stroke of a pen, create a policy that will unlock data sharing. To build the trust between industry, government, NGOs and farmers that does unlock it, will require many conversations, over a long period of time too – we need to get started. It will only be by working together more closely, in a more connected agri-food supply chain, and trusting each other to make the right decisions, that we can see the whole course and win the race. #agridata #sustainability #agriculture

Trust is key. There's a lot of uncertainty when it comes to quantifying soil carbon and as Ewan highlights, this uncertainty doesn't help getting farmers to trust carbon removals and carbon markets... At Agricarbon, that's exactly what we're trying to do: ensure that soil carbon can be measured at scale, because you can't manage what you don't measure! #soildata #soilcarbon #carbonremovals

At times we are to modest about the great sustainability initiatives that our CGI colleagues are involved in, like the role in Stichting Samen Circulair Heerenveen. Typical Frisian to be down to earth about it, but so worthwhile to repost #CGI #Localcommunity #Sustainability
'If you want to go fast, go alone; if you want to go far, go together!' This saying certainly applies to our collaboration with Stichting Samen Circulair Heerenveen, a unique initiative of the local business community and sc Heerenveen. Under the motto that sport connects and activates, as Act Sports (part of Beaulieu International Group) we are proud of this collaboration and take up the challenge, together with the partners within Stichting Samen Circulair Heerenveen, to develop an artificial turf football pitch which will completely be based on the recycling principle through the reuse of old artificial grass fields. Great developments ahead of us!

Question: What does the Formula 1 Grand Prix have in common with the Northcote Local Food Garden - a communal permaculture patch in Melbourne's inner north? Answer: Not much, until this year. Back in March, the Reground team worked with Formula 1® Australian Grand Prix to collect all of the ground coffee from the event and deliver it to NLFG, located not far from Reground HQ in Darebin City Council. At the Food Garden, Kerrie and the other volunteers are now using the ground coffee to create perfectly calibrated compost and prepare the garden for autumn planting. When we say we're turning waste into a resource, this is what we mean. The ground coffee that event organisers would otherwise have paid high fees to send to #landfill is instead helping nourish soil and grow #community right here in Melbourne. It's simple, it's local and it works.
