Be Careful Who You Reject! 😬 One thing I always advise companies is to keep an open mind regarding required experience & candidate backgrounds when reviewing the applications. Think about it... Instead of focusing solely on traditional qualifications and perfect background, try to see the potential in diverse experiences. For example: 🔧 Looking for a Sales Engineer? Consider for instance, project managers. They interact with customers regularly and often possess the skills and potential to excel in sales. 📩 Hiring for a Content Marketing Role? Look at candidates with a background in journalism. Their storytelling ability and content creation skills can be a huge asset. 📈 Searching for a Business Development Manager? You could consider for instance, candidates with a background in consulting. Their strategic thinking, problem-solving skills, and ability to build relationships can drive growth and identify new opportunities. By broadening your perspective, you might discover hidden gems who can bring fresh ideas and valuable skills to your team. Besides this, for majority roles, skills can be trained 😊 It is the right attitude you should be looking for. Why you should hire communication grads: Humans are hardwired to spend most of their time thinking about social interactions. Either we're preemptively thinking about an upcoming conversation, thinking about a conversation we're currently in, or reflecting on one in the past. This tendency has helped us since historically our survival was dependent on our ability to be a part of our tribe. But the world has changed and our hardwiring hasn't. Now we have large organizations with teams of people all thinking about their interactions with other people. If you have a divided team, you'll have a less productive team, a less satisfied team, and a less committed team. A disconnected team results in higher turnover, more inefficiencies, and a worse customer experience. It gets even more complex when you think about customers, clients, and stakeholders because they need to feel connected to. You need someone who actively thinks about these dynamics and employs methods and campaigns to keep your organization connected. A communication graduate would be a perfect fit. But don't hire any comm grad - look for someone who also has some technical or creative knowledge. Everybody communicates yet not every organization thinks about how they communicate. Hey, what’s your problem? If you’re an internal communications practitioner, that’s a question you should be asking your stakeholders frequently. That’s right, you’re out looking for trouble. That’s because one of the biggest ways you can help your organization is to bring awareness to an issue that might be holding it back in some way. That doesn’t mean that you’re out looking for negative news. It means bringing issues to the forefront so they can be properly addressed. For example, I worked at a tech company that had loads of talented engineers, but not enough of them were on career paths to become company fellows—the equivalent of a senior leader and the ones who determine a company’s strategic technological direction. It turns out that many of these engineers just weren’t giving the possibility much thought—they weren’t aware of the steps they needed to take to get on this career path, and managers weren’t really having the discussions. But after a handful of well-thought-out messages to managers and company-wide articles on the issue, the pipeline for this career path started to fill. Now, the company doesn’t have to worry about having enough internal candidates to fill its future technology leadership roles. So go out. Look for trouble. Find it.
