Clear communication, transparent decision-making, and accessibility to leadership are the three key factors that instill confidence among church staff, according to our 2023 Healthy Church Staff Assessment. Out of the over thousand respondents, 57% reported feeling well guided and supported by their leadership, indicating that they resonate with these crucial elements. However, there remains an alarming 23% of staff members who feel like they are left in a fog, not getting the direction or support they need - leaving a considerable room for improvement. Those teetering in the middle, unsure and neutral, form another 19%. Leadership plays a significant role in eliminating this ambiguity. Expanding communication channels, explaining decision-making processes, and providing frequent updates about the church's direction are vital. But most importantly, it means creating a space for staff to voice their concerns and share their ideas. For those seeking to dive deeper into their church staff's perception of leadership, consider the invaluable insight our assessments offer. Listen to the full episode for more:

Check out my latest Human Capital Leadership article, "Rebuilding Social Trust in Turbulent Times." From the conclusion: "While trust takes a long time to build, it can easily break down. By making transparency, stakeholder inclusion, integrity and civic participation core priorities, organizations can play an instrumental role in repairing fractured social bonds. Though broader societal issues are difficult for any single entity to remedy alone, community-focused strategies like these empower leaders to nurture trust at a local grassroots level through genuine commitment, open dialogue and cooperative efforts. With patience and perseverance, organizations large and small have the ability to strengthen the connective tissue of society and help bring people together once more in times that could otherwise pull them apart."
