Last week, we talked about how Paris has started imposing high parking charges for SUVs because of their larger size. However, the length of cars in all classes has been increasing since the 1960s, with some growing up to 2cm every year.
This trend is mainly influenced by consumer demand and market competition, where car makers seek to offer more features, technology, and larger engines, ultimately leading to more comfort and space. This calls for broader policy changes to address this issue.
To achieve this, policy recommendations could focus on incentivising the production and purchase of smaller cars, promoting the use of alternative transportation modes, and implementing stricter regulations on vehicle size and emissions.
By taking such steps, we can work towards creating a more sustainable and efficient transportation system.
