Today, we honor the memory of those we lost on September 11, 2001 and throughout the Global War on Terrorism. We reflect on the courage of first responders, the strength of survivors, and the unity of a nation that “stood together” in the face of adversity. As we commemorate this day, let us remember the core values that make our society strong: pride, togetherness, and resilience. These are the #BuildingBlocks of a great society, and they remind us that even in the darkest times, we can find light through unity and compassion. On September 12, 2001, the American spirit was marked by a palpable change and sense of unity, resilience, and determination. The day after the tragic events of 9/11, Americans came together in an unprecedented show of solidarity. 1.     People from all walks of life, regardless of their backgrounds, joined hands to support one another. There was a collective sense of being part of a larger community, united by shared grief and a common purpose. 2.     American flags were displayed everywhere, symbolizing national pride and a commitment to the country’s values. The attacks had intended to break the nation’s spirit, but instead, they strengthened it. 3. Despite the immense sorrow and shock, there was a strong resolve to rebuild and recover. Americans demonstrated remarkable resilience, determined to overcome the tragedy and emerge stronger. 4. There was a renewed devotion to the principles of freedom, democracy, and respect for human life. The attacks reinforced the importance of these values and the determination to uphold them. The spirit of 9/11 and the years that followed, were a testament to the strength and resilience of the American people, showing that even in the darkest times, unity and compassion can light the way forward. This week, the House Appropriations Committee approved a bill that would jeopardize more than 71,000 AmeriCorps positions, risking the loss of vital resources for community-based organizations all over the country in 2026. Honoring Patriots Day: A Day of Reflection and Unity Patriots Day is a moment to honor the lives lost and the bravery of first responders during the tragic events of September 11, 2001. As public servants and human resource professionals, it’s essential to recognize the profound role of government employees—many of whom were on the front lines that day—who risked and sacrificed their lives for the safety of others. In the public sector, we are reminded daily of the values of service, community, and commitment to the common good.
