Stories like this are still far too common, where officers face termination or disciplinary action simply for asking for help or sharing that they are experiencing mental health struggles. First responders are human being, human beings who are asked to be repeatedly exposed to trauma and then expected to go back out there and do it again. Every first responder, whether they work for a small or large agency, should have access to competent mental health resources. By competent I mean mental health providers who have training in and an understanding of what first responders face and the unique challenges of the profession. Leadership, many of whom entered in the “suck it up era” need to adapt and understand that “suck it up” leads to illness, substance abuse, and suicide.

In 2023 when we surveyed Edmontonians, 71% said they would like to see increased law enforcement or security presence in the core. The EDBA stepped up to the plate and introduced a new program called Night Patrol. The program has two teams comprised of a security professional and peer support worker from Hiregood.ca (an incredible organization, btw). Night Patrol is out seven days a week from 12:30 - 8:30 a.m. conducting physical and visual checks of businesses, buildings and downtown public assets. It seems that every new generation of Law Enforcement Officers are looked at by the Officers of earlier generations with skepticism. They aren’t as tough, they are soft, they have no life experience, the job isn’t the same, they couldn’t have handled the old days, they aren’t as good, etc. etc. This has probably been going on since the beginning of Lawl Enforcement in the United States in the 1600’s. In my mind, I can see a veteran Night Watchman in 1685 looking at a new daytime Constable and thinking, “What is this job coming to?” When the new generations come in, sometimes with thought processes and views that are different, too often we veterans are to quick to denounce them and declare the profession dead. We do this with the attitude that our own generation was never questioned or looked upon with suspicion by previous ones. Each generation, just as the individual people in them, has strengths and weakness and no matter how much we hate to admit it, things and times change and that has a major impact on the nature of Policing. However one thing that never changes no matter what the generation, is that a good Cop is brave, selfless, dedicated, committed, and willing to risk all to do what is right.
