So excited to see! ✍🏻🚉 The Wirral Heritage Tramway in Birkenhead, England is the last remaining cable-operated street tramway in Great Britain. It is one of only three such tram systems still in operation worldwide. Unlike the famous cable car system in San Francisco, the Wirral tramway functions as a street funicular. The tram cars are permanently attached to the cable and are started and stopped by engaging or disengaging the cable, rather than having the cars move independently along the cable. #RailwaySafety

"The trips people make are shaped by the transportation options they have." This is a really important, and should be an obvious point from transit YouTuber Reece Martin. And yet, it's something that so many people in transportation planning, financing and government ignore. We justify not doing things like building better transit systems "because people don't do it already". Perhaps they don't do it because the options just aren't there, rather than they don't want to. Sometimes transport use is low not because the demand isn't there, but more because the transit that does exist is just so unfit for purpose. Here he makes a very eloquent case for New York, where reframing how transit is built could transform not just how New York City functions, but the people in the entire region. This is particularly important in North America where transit systems are often drawn along municipal lines that don't interact with each other very well. Paris, Tokyo and London have transformed themselves by creating infrastructure that cuts across the city and brings in the surrounding regions. It's time places like the Tri-State Area, the GTA or what might be the Northern Powerhouse in the UK figured out the same.

The Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP) released the latest Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Standard for 2024, setting new global benchmarks, with a spotlight on Peshawar's BRT system, Zu Peshawar. Zu Peshawar, awarded the Gold Standard in BRT certification in 2022, achieves an exceptional score of 98 out of 100, making it South Asia's sole Gold Standard BRT system. The report emphasizes Zu Peshawar's excellence across various parameters including equity, affordability, sustainability, safety, and accessibility. Specifically, it applauds the system's off-board fare collection, clear branding, and directional signage. Notably, Zu Peshawar's proactive measures against gender-based violence and personal security, such as gender audits and designated women-only spaces, contribute to its high score. Dr. Tariq Usman, CEO of TransPeshawar, expresses pride in being recognized as a global BRT reference, affirming dedication to excellence and community-oriented public transportation transformation. People that know me know how passionate I am about ENS signs. Blue ENS signs can be found at every railroad crossing. If you have an incident on or near the railroad, call this number BEFORE 911. 911 dispatchers are unlikely to be able to identify the proper railroad and alert them. Only ENS dispatchers can stop a train. With Class 1 speeds reaching and exceeding 60 miles per hour, seconds matter! Do not proceed to another crossing - the crossing numbers are unique, and a nearby crossing may not belong to the same railroad. Do not perform a Google search for nearby railroads - you’re rather unlikely to reach the correct one, especially in a major city. Trains with loaded railcars trailing them cannot stop without significant distance to do so, which means that even if the train can see you, it cannot stop in time (many require a mile or more!). Always assume railroad tracks are live and that a train is coming. See tracks, think train!
