Understanding burn out in the Veterinary Industry and how to support Veterinary nurses and Surgeons: 💚#Keepingvetsandnursesinpractice 💚 More and more vets and nurses are looking into non-clinical work and loosing their passion for the industry… Veterinary medicine is a deeply rewarding field, driven by a passion for animals and commitment to their well-being. However, alongside the joys of caring for our furry friends, veterinary nurses and surgeons often face significant challenges that can lead to burnout. Why burnout happens: - High workload: Clinics may be operating with limited staff and resources, leading to long hours and heavy work loads. The demanding nature of the job can quickly lead to exhaustion. - Emotional Toll: Dealing with sick or injured animals, as well as worried owners can be emotionally draining. We often perform strong bonds with our patients making it harder to cope with loss or difficult cases. - Compassion Fatigue: Empathising with our patients in pain or distress can lead to compassion fatigue where we can feel disconnected with work or people around us. - Lack of support: in some cases, veterinary nurses and surgeons can feel unsupported by colleagues or employers. Possibly without enough guidance or support it can lead to the feeling of being overwhelmed. Things we can do to prevent it: 💠 Promote work-life balance: Encourage our staff and colleagues to prioritise self-care and balance in the workplace. Schedule regular breaks, providing flexible schedules and encouraging staff to take annual leave throughout the year. 💠 Create a supportive environment: Foster a culture of open communication and support by encouraging there are no silly questions! Encouraging members of the team to share feelings and experiences. Offer regular one-one’s can help to offer coaching, support, build relationships, recognise achievements, and even encourage career development. 💠 Offer regular in house and external training or CPD for development opportunities: Most practices offer a CPD budget, but an idea that is not done very often is to utilise our staff members experiences by arranging in-house CPD, this can also build relationships and share ideas as well as encourage open questions and further ideas. 💚 Let’s support our vets and nurses by maintaining well-being and continue the passion for their work. Taking care of ourselves and our veterinary community is essential for everyone to provide the best possible care to our patients! – Remember your 'why' to starting! #Veterinaryindustry #Veterinarynurse #Veterinarysurgeon

DEIB advocate | Veterinary Leadership Mentor | Operations Manager | Speaker | Course Creator | Podcast Host | Personal Trainer — I support Veterinary Managers become Veterinary Leaders 🐾🦄
Today marks the final day of National Veterinary Technician Week, and while I've been posting daily over on Instagram, I found myself at a loss for what to share today. Then… this happened. Let me set the scene: It’s 6 p.m., and my dog starts his usual routine of scratching, biting at my pant leg, and whining. He’s already eaten, so I know it’s time for a walk. I throw on a sweater, leash him up, grab a poop bag, and head out the door—nothing out of the ordinary, just another evening stroll. As I step out, I notice a pile of Amazon boxes. Being the neighborly person I am, I go to bring them inside, assuming they’re for someone else. But then I see my name on one of the larger boxes. “That’s strange,” I think. “I didn’t order anything.” I start unboxing, and soon realize—it’s a gift. A thoughtful, unexpected gift from one of the managers at a hospital I oversee. The same manager who has had such a tumultuous year. It’s a testament to her and her character that she thought about me despite all she and her hospital has been through 💚. As I wipe away tears, touched by the gesture, I get a LinkedIn notification. I’ve received a recommendation. Not just any recommendation, but from a former boss who has challenged and pushed me to grow, even when I resisted. The message was so kind, so heartfelt, it completely floored me. I’m not one who typically looks for recognition. As a leader, I'm still a technician at heart—working behind the scenes, rarely acknowledged for it. But that’s why these moments mean so much more. It’s Tech Week, a time to honor veterinary technicians who are often the unsung heroes of animal care. And here I am, being reminded in such a powerful way that the work we do, even when not directly clinical, has an impact. When people ask if I miss being in the clinic, the answer is complicated. The opportunity to influence not just one clinic, but entire teams of techs, managers, and frontline staff has been an incredible journey. I still jump in when I can, and I’m always advocating for my credentialed techs and vet assistants—because I’ve been in their shoes. It’s what makes this week and these moments so much more meaningful. I wouldn’t trade this experience for the world. Thank you Danielle Pinion and Alicia Shelly for making my night 💜

We’ve had hundreds of nurses apply for the courses we’re offering in partnership with Lincoln Institute of Veterinary Business 🎉🎉🥳🥳 Wow!!! So excited by the interest by our wonderful animal health experts!!!! 🐾🐾 It’s Day 2 of our Nursekind awareness campaign from the team at Royal Canin ANZ. Here are some top tips by our Chief Health Officer Dr Bronwen Slack 🩺🥰🐱🐈🐈⬛🐕🐾 1. Be respectful and courteous: Just like with any healthcare professional, it is important to treat veterinary nurses with respect and courtesy. They play a crucial role in pet care, and showing kindness goes a long way. 2. Provide clear information: When discussing your pet's condition or symptoms, be as detailed and clear as possible. This will help the veterinary nurse understand the situation and relay accurate information to the doctor. 3. Ask questions: Veterinary nurses are highly knowledgeable and can provide valuable insights about pet health. Do not hesitate to ask questions about treatments, medications, procedures, and preventive care. They can offer explanations in an accessible language. 4. Listen and follow instructions: Veterinary nurses may provide instructions for post-treatment care, medication administration, or dietary changes. Listen carefully and follow their instructions to ensure pet recovery and well-being. 5. Communicate concerns: If you have any concerns or questions about the care received, do not hesitate to express them. Vet nurses are there to address your worries and provide guidance. 6. Update medical history: If your pet has had any recent medical issues, surgeries, or changes in behaviour and the clinic is not across the history, make sure to update the vet nurse. A comprehensive medical history helps them provide the best possible care. 7. Be patient: Veterinary clinics can be busy places. Be patient if the vet nurse is attending to other animals or tasks. They will give your pet the attention they need as soon as possible. 8. Discuss Costs: If cost is a concern, you can discuss it with the vet nurse. They can provide estimates for treatments or procedures and help you explore different options. 9. Express gratitude: If the vet nurse has gone beyond in caring for your pet, expressing gratitude is always appreciated. A simple thank you can make their day. 10. Stay calm: If your pet is anxious or scared, staying calm can help ease their stress. Animals observe human emotions, so your demeanour can influence their comfort level.
