Executive Resume Writer for Global Leaders + LinkedIn Branding | Interview Coach 💼 Former Recruiter —> Founder of Briefcase Coach | Outplacement Provider | The Future of Work is Here™ | LinkedIn Learning Instructor
Q: What’s the one thing every job seeker (regardless of experience and title) needs to prepare—other than a resume? A: A concise and confident response to the interview question “Tell me about yourself” A formula that I suggest to my clients is: Hook 2 Strengths that relate to the job And WIFM Which stands for “what’s in it for me” I want you to start with a hook–or a story– to draw your audience in. Stories are remembered up to 22 times more than facts alone. A great story could include how you fell into your field or why you do what you do Here's the formula in action. I wrote this for a fake nurse leader applying for a Chief Nursing Officer position. When I was younger, I was very close to my grandparents. Around the age of ten, my grandfather became seriously ill & spent a significant amount of time in the hospital. Fortunately, we lived near the Cleveland Clinic, which gave me firsthand experience of some of the best healthcare in the world. While I was impressed by the physicians' knowledge & skill, it was the nurses who truly inspired me. They were the ones consistently present in our hospital room, forming a special & intimate bond with our family. When my grandfather's condition suddenly worsened, it was a nurse who identified the issue & prolonged his life due to her deep understanding of his situation. That experience inspired me to go to nursing school. As you can see from my resume, I spent the first 8 years of my career working night shift as an emergency medicine nurse. By the nature of the job, I had the privilege of seeing everything & everybody. The key strength I gained in this role was the ability to triage and 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗼𝘀 quickly. The emergency room at XX Hospital is one of the nation's busiest. I daily had to prioritize tasks & delegate responsibilities. As the ED Nurse Manager, I got tapped to lead urgent care expansion in four satellite areas. In the ED, I discovered plenty of opportunities for 𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁. This led me to get my Masters in Healthcare Administration. This education facilitated my transition into clinical compliance & strategy. Over the past ten years, I have held progressive leadership roles at XX Hospital, focusing on refining practices to achieve both clinical and operational excellence. One of my proudest achievements is helping the hospital achieve a 66% reduction in serious safety events by launching the first acute care patient safety huddle system, which reviews hospital events and quality measures daily. When I received a call from X recruiter about the Chief Nursing Officer role, I was eager to learn more. Your hospital has a strong reputation for clinical excellence, & your "Zero Harm" quality and safety program is one of the best in the country. I am confident that my background at XX Hospital aligns well with your initiatives. Additionally, I am excited to learn more in this interview about your growth plans. How'd I do??
