Explore the evolution of our Museum Volunteers for the Environment program in a new publication authored by the Frost Science team in the Journal of Museum Education. From program activities to lessons learned over the past 15 years, we hope this is a helpful case study for other museums interested in developing similar programs. https://lnkd.in/e-xNKa9m Shannon Jones Cathryn Freund, PhD

ED at Springhouse where we are fundamentally transforming the purpose of education to build beloved community through vitality-centered, intergenerational, and culturally diverse programs
Creativity brings people together. Art sends a message. Springhouse hosts a Procession of the Species on Earth day each year and it is pretty magical. When we hold this parade, we honor the species of the Earth and we shed light on the danger they are in. Learning from the Earth and taking care of vulnerability are two of our cultural design principles. Through this parade, we practice those principles. Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/ekZFqbng

How to see from the different angle? This quarter we’re working on Cinema creating our movies. This is traditional and one of the favourite topic, the Cinema quarter was developed and created in our school 8 years ago, in 2016, and each year we go through the number of disciplines to create together with our little students movies on important topic, from ecology to equality. #architecturalthinkingschool #architecturalthinking #architecturaleducation

From 2020 to 2022, ETWIE tackled a crucial project on managing asbestos in heritage collections. Key questions addressed included: 💡 What are the safest and most legal ways to handle asbestos, from removal to restoration and conservation? 💡 How does the presence of asbestos impact collections, staffing, and restoration efforts? 💡 How should museums revise their acquisition and collection policies to navigate health risks and the high costs of safe conservation? 💡 What is the value of preserving asbestos-containing items in cultural heritage? The project also resulted in a brochure with practical guidelines specifically designed for volunteers in the Flemish museum sector.

National Science Week is almost here, and our major program "Survive and Thrive" brings you a series of open events across the state to engage people of all ages with the world of scientific knowledge, with a focus on fun and discovery! Whether we’re talking about people, organisations, or the relationship between humanity and the rest of the natural world, one thing holds true: we’re stronger together. “Community” extends beyond human collectives to embrace a vast network of amazing, adaptable lifeforms, all of us reliant on each other to survive and thrive in our remarkable planet’s dynamic web of life. From major public institutions to grass-roots knowledge networks, our 2024 program demonstrates the power of collective action, from public libraries answering a thirst for deeper understanding with their local communities, to neighbourhood houses and community groups conducting citizen science and promoting evidence-based sustainability practices. "Survive and Thrive" is a series of community-focused events presented in collaboration between Museums Victoria, Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria, Zoos Victoria, Public Libraries Victoria, Neighbourhood Houses Victoria and the Royal Society of Victoria for National Science Week, produced by the Inspiring Victoria program. Senior Director of Children, Family and Youth Learning and Research at American Museum of Natural History
A quick interesting read.
Researchers at the American Museum of Natural History have found that over the last 120 years, the porosity—or small-scale holes—in #Mussel shells along the East Coast of the United States has increased, potentially due to warming waters. The SAVE WHIM MUSEUM Advocacy Group is thrilled to announce that Estate Whim Museum (where I was proud to be their Executive Director for several years) has been chosen as one of America’s 11 Most Endangered Historic Places for 2024 by the National Trust for Historic Preservation The National Trust for Historic Preservation unveiled their 37th annual list of America’s 11 Most Endangered Historic Places, shining a light on some of the nation’s greatest cultural treasures and the threats facing them. This year’s list exemplifies the National Trust’s continued commitment to telling the full American story, with a diverse array of sites both inside and outside the continental United States. These places mirror the complexities, challenges, and opportunities that have always been part of what it means to be American—and each have stories that are deserving of attention and care. So far over 350 places have been listed over the life of the program, and only a handful have been lost. Estate Whim Museum, Frederiksted, St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands Established during the colonization of St. Croix by Denmark, Estate Whim was a plantation producing cotton and sugar for export. The lives and legacies of those enslaved by plantation owners and those who continued to labor there for meager wages for a century after emancipation are inextricably tied to the site, which now hosts a museum, library and archives, and public programming. Repeated hurricanes have damaged many of Estate Whim Museum’s historic buildings and structures, and the site steward needs support and resources to move forward with repairs. https://lnkd.in/e-wKAFYG
