Did you know that food insecurity affects rural America in the following ways: *In 2021, 11% of rural households were food insecure. *9 out of 10 counties with the highest food insecurity rates are rural. *Rural communities make up 63% of all U.S counties, but 87% of counties with the highest food insecurity rates. *Food insecurity is linked to a wide range of negative health outcomes, and rural Americans are at higher risk for poor health outcomes than their urban counterparts. *Although food security is slightly higher in rural areas than in urban areas, 12.5% of individuals living in rural communities were food insecure in 2019. Your dollars make a difference. Every $1 = 2 meals. Start your new year off right and donate today!
There is only one place for neighbors to buy groceries in Sabetha, a rural Kansas town that is home to fewer than 3,000 people. That means if someone can't find the nutritious foods that meet their needs—or isn't able to afford them—they are left with little to no options. Luckily, the town's community food pantry is there to help fill the meal gap when times are difficult and uncertain.

HUNGER CAN'T WAIT — The Second Harvest Food Bank of Southeast North Carolina - an Action Pathways Inc. program - has introduced a farmer's market at its Food Distribution Center in Fayetteville, where those facing hunger can choose fresh produce and meats, and it has been a game-changer. On average, 200 families have taken advantage of the market each time it is open, a testament to the program's success and the community's support. SHFB is committed to expanding these markets to communities in its 7-county service area where the need is urgent. In this service area, 16.7%, or over 130,000 individuals, are food insecure. Together, we can make a significant difference in these communities because HUNGER CAN'T WAIT! We don’t have a food shortage, we have a distribution shortage. Rather than passing our surplus food around the table, we're throwing it in the trash. Rewarding #fooddonation, as an alternative to landfilling, is the first line of defense against rampant #foodwaste. In Rhode Island, where #foodinsecurity is high, #taxincentives would be a useful tool to help divert more of that surplus food to families in need. 🍪🤖 https://lnkd.in/ek44VCYy Thanks to ReFED and the Rhode Island Food Policy Council.

Today on World Hunger Day, we are reflecting on the 1.6 million North Carolina households who don’t have enough to eat. Farmer Foodshare exists to change that number. We work to ensure everyone in North Carolina has healthy, delicious food to eat, not just today, but every day. In the heart of such a bountiful growing region and robust local food system, it is inexcusable that our neighbors lack access to healthy meals. We envision a Triangle-area community where fresh, local food is available to all, regardless of income level. You can help! Your support today means we can continue expanding our hunger relief and food justice programs all year. And since we always source from local farmers, you’re also contributing to the resiliency of our Triangle-area foodshed – a win-win for food security! Make a gift now through the link below: https://lnkd.in/eFHVnH9Q We look forward to a time when our society and economy is more just and equitable, but until then, we will continue making sure eaters of all income levels can share in the local harvest. . . . . . . . . #farmerfoodshare #farmerfoodshareprograms #hungerrelief #foodshed #foodaccess #foodsecurity #northcarolina #foodhub #sproutnewgrowth #farmerfoodsharecommunity

October 16 marks World Food Day recognized by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, and this year's theme "Right to Foods for a Better Life and a Better Future" reflects on the ongoing efforts to ensure everyone has access to nourishment. In Northumberland County, many families, seniors, and children face the harsh reality of not knowing where their next meal will come from. As winter nears, some are forced to choose between heating their homes and buying groceries, while others grapple with the shame of relying on local food banks to feed their families. We believe that tackling hunger starts close to home, and your support can help fund food security programs like Northumberland Eats 2.0, which provides microgrants to grassroots agencies operating as food banks and hubs. These efforts directly combat food insecurity by reinforcing the safety nets that so many in our community depend on daily. Please help us continue to create programs and fund organizations working to feed our community. https://lnkd.in/gqPnsjN2 #worldfoodday #unitedway #unitedwaynorthumberland #northumberlandeats #communitymatters

A milestone report shows that grocery stores in the #Pacific Coast region have made significant strides in combating food waste. Participating local grocers, including Albertsons, PCC Community Markets, Kroger, and Sprouts, have slashed surplus food by 25% and boosted food donation rates by 20%. “Food is the number one material going to garbage from Seattle businesses and we now have the best grocery data in the country that shows promising progress,” said Liz Fikejs, SPU Waste Prevention Program Manager. “Not only is less food going to waste, but more food is being donated and composted across the West Coast region. This large-scale effort is how we make industry-wide change and prevent food waste from contributing to greenhouse gas emissions.” SPU is also working with food service businesses such as dining halls, and hotel/catering operations to help them prevent unsold food in the first place. And, through April 26th, Seattle businesses, nonprofits, and other community organizations are invited to apply for grant funding to improve Seattle’s “food rescue” operations to capture surplus food for hunger relief. To learn more about how grocery stores are diverting food waste, check out The New York Times article (https://lnkd.in/g3U6V34w) or read the report here: https://lnkd.in/g3UHG44h #Sustainability #ClimateAction #FoodWastePrevention

We have a story in the latest issue of Neighbourhood Media detailing all the work we do via Addison Road Food Pantry Camperdown, our low-cost grocery store which makes use of rescued, donated and purchased food to support the local community and its needs. The story (link below) shows how we help feed people from Mission Australia's Common Ground housing project and the nearby Johanna O’Dea Court, a multi-storey NSW Family and Community Services apartment block. It also explains how we serve people living on a tight budget in Camperdown and Glebe, as well as people who come to the pantry from right across the City of Sydney LGA. Most of all, the story is a celebration of our monthly Addi Road 'Let's Get Cooking' sessions (AKA "the Cook-Up"), which offers 260 free hot meals for Mission Australia and Joanna O'Dea residents, as well as those shopping at our Addi Road Food Pantry Camperdown. These sessions involve a monthly cooking demo inside the Common Ground building. Food literacy is the ultimate goal behind Addi Road's Let's Get Cooking program. As well as simply providing a free hot meal (and dessert) each month, we look at helping people to shop AND cook with often very limited funds. Each month there are easy recipes on offer (and ready to be tasted) along extra tips for stocking people's kitchen cupboards; a list of essentials to facilitate simple, inexpensive and nutritious recipes that will match whatever Addi Road Food Pantry might have in stock. It's about building an integrated food ecology for people battling. With a few extra special ingredients over a shared meal as the community comes together: camaraderie and connection. + #Addiroad #cityofsydney #foodrelief #foodjustice #housing #inequality #Camperdown #Glebe #MissionAustralia #homeless #battling #costofliving #poverty #resilience #mentalhealth #wellbeing #nutrition #diet #charity #community #freemeals #cookingworkshop #volunteers #caring #education #connection #letsgetcooking #neighbourhoodmedia https://lnkd.in/gs7vVEvM
